Every Lightsaber by Film and Series, in Release Order

This reference lists every lightsaber in the Star Wars films and series, in release order from 1977 to 2027, with owner, colour and type. Entries that could not be checked against a source are marked, so you can see what is solid and what is not.

On this page9 sections

Every lightsaber that appears in the live-action films and the main series is listed below, in release order, from A New Hope in 1977 to the films due in 2026 and 2027. Each row gives the owner, the blade colour and the type. Where a detail could not be checked, the row says so [28].

Use it as a Star Wars lightsaber list to see which lightsaber appears in which film, or as a short guide to lightsaber colors by character. The lightsabers by film are grouped by release date.

This list covers films and series. Games, comics and books are not included, apart from a few points flagged in the notes.

How to read the list of every lightsaber

Colours and types follow the editorial notes behind this site, each of which rests on a public source named in the Sources section [28]. A few rules apply:

  • Order: release order, not story order. A show that ran for several years sits at the year it began.
  • Type: single, double-bladed, crossguard, or another design. Two sibling guides cover the unusual shapes: double-bladed lightsaber and crossguard lightsaber.
  • Unchecked: the notes mark some entries as not verified. Those are called out in the last section.
  • Colour meaning: for what each colour is said to mean, see lightsaber colors.

Patterns across the saga

A few things stand out once the tables are side by side:

  • Red: used by Vader, Dooku, Maul and Palpatine in the films, and by Kylo Ren. The notes say red is linked in canon to the Sith and Inquisitors, with crystals “bled” through the dark side [32].
  • Purple: only Mace Windu has one in the films [5].
  • Black: the Darksaber appears in The Clone Wars, Rebels, The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett [8][9][16][20].
  • Double-bladed: Maul’s saber in The Phantom Menace, plus the Inquisitors’ spinning type [4][9][21].
  • Crossguard: Kylo Ren across three films [10][14][17].

If you want one of these designs in real life, the picks in best lightsaber are the starting point, and the two sibling guides above go into each shape.

What is unverified

The notes behind this page mark these as unchecked or partly checked:

  • The Bad Batch, Tales of the Jedi and Tales of the Empire: colours and owners [18][23][25].
  • The Mandalorian and Grogu and Starfighter: no confirmed sabers [30][31].
  • Visions: colours come from press descriptions [19].
  • The Acolyte: Qimir’s colour, red or orange, depends on the source [26][27].
  • Ventress’s yellow saber, Savage Opress and the Inquisitor assignments [8][9][18].
