Crossguard Lightsaber: Kylo Ren's Saber and Real Replicas

A crossguard lightsaber has two short side blades beside the main blade. Kylo Ren's saber, introduced in Episode VII in 2015, is the famous one, and the side blades are tied to a cracked crystal. Hobby-saber replicas are listed from $295 to $685 on vendor pages as of November 2026.

A crossguard lightsaber is a single-hilt saber with two short blades projecting sideways from the emitter, like the guard of a sword. The best-known one belongs to Kylo Ren, introduced in The Force Awakens in 2015 [1][2]. Real replicas are sold as pre-made sabers, and the hobby-saber prices read for this page ran from $295 to $685 [8][9].

Why Kylo Ren’s saber has side blades

The side blades are a plot detail, not only a style. A fan wiki says Kylo bled the kyber crystal to turn it to the dark side, which cracked it, and then added lateral vents to the hilt to release the excess heat [5]. The same wiki says the design was modelled on ancient crossguard sabers [5].

Wikipedia describes the weapon as having two crosshilt blades that make it look like a greatsword, and says canon reference books attribute the unstable look to the cracked crystal [6]. It adds that Jedi occasionally use the crossguard design too [6].

The handbook card for this saber matches that story: a self-built saber with a cracked crystal and side blades that burn together with the main blade [1].

The fan wiki also records that the saber started as a blue saber built by Ben Solo while he trained under Luke Skywalker, and that Kylo later modified it [5]. That origin appears in a flashback in The Last Jedi [5].

Where the crossguard saber appears

People also call it a crossguard saber, and the search term “Kylo Ren lightsaber” refers to this same weapon. It is the version most Kylo Ren lightsaber replica listings copy [8][9].

The handbook lists three films [1]:

FilmYearWhat happens with the saber
The Force Awakens2015Kylo kills Han Solo and fights Rey and Finn [2]
The Last Jedi2017Kylo fights with it again [3]
The Rise of Skywalker2019He throws it away after a talk with the spirit of his father and becomes Ben Solo again [4][5]

The fan wiki says Ben threw the saber into the ocean at Kef Bir [5]. Both sources agree he no longer used it [4][5].

Crossguard lightsaber replicas you can buy

Replicas come from three places: a toy or collector line (Hasbro), specialist hobby-saber vendors, and 3D-printed hilts, which one seller lists as a hilt with no blade [7].

The Ultrasabers collection page does not describe the electronics or the crossguard build of each model, so use the product pages [8]. The Artsabers listing gives 26, 32 and 36 inch blade options, a 32 GB SD card, 25 sound fonts and a hard case [9]. For what those terms mean, see neopixel lightsaber.

How to read a crossguard listing

Listings use different words for the same parts. These are the points worth checking before you compare prices:

  • Blade lengths: The Artsabers page lists 26, 32 and 36 inch options and also shows other lengths in its guide, so confirm what the cart offers [9].
  • Side blades: Check that they are included. The Artsabers page says the two side blades come with every blade option [9].
  • Electronics: The collection page for the Ultrasabers range does not name them, so open the individual product page [8].
  • Rating: Look for the vendor’s own statement on dueling or display use [9].
  • Warranty and returns: The Artsabers page states a 1-year warranty and a 30-day return window [9].

If you prefer to build, the process and the part list are in build your own lightsaber and lightsaber parts list. Treat a crossguard as an advanced build, because the side emitters add wiring to the hilt.

What changes in a crossguard build

A crossguard saber has more to power than a single blade. The handbook’s glossary notes that the extra side blades need more LEDs and more current [11]. That affects battery choice and how long a charge lasts. For the practical side, see lightsaber batteries.

The hilt also needs the vents or side emitters built in, so a custom build needs a hilt designed for it. Compare options in lightsaber hilts.

Crossguard compared with a plain single-blade saber

  • Pro: Instantly recognisable shape, and the film link is clear [1][5]
  • Pro: Sold by more than one specialist vendor [8][9]
  • Con: More power draw, so shorter runtime [11]
  • Con: Sparring suitability varies by model, so check each vendor’s rating [9]

If you want a different two-blade design, read double-bladed lightsaber, and for the saber across all films see every lightsaber by film. For a general buying list, see best lightsaber.

FAQ

Who has the crossguard lightsaber?

Kylo Ren, in The Force Awakens (2015), The Last Jedi (2017) and The Rise of Skywalker (2019) [1][2][3][4].

Why does Kylo Ren’s lightsaber have side blades?

The fan wiki says the crystal cracked when it was bled, and the side vents release excess heat [5]. Wikipedia says canon reference books explain the unstable look this way [6].

Is the crossguard design only for Sith?

No. Wikipedia says Jedi occasionally use the crossguard design too [6].

What is a cracked kyber crystal?

It is the in-story explanation for the unstable blade. The fan wiki says Kylo corrupted the crystal by bleeding it, and it cracked [5]. Wikipedia says canon reference books give the same reason [6].

Is a crossguard saber the same as a double-bladed saber?

No. A double-bladed saber has an emitter at each end of the hilt. A crossguard has one main blade plus two short side blades. See double-bladed lightsaber.

Can you buy an official Kylo Ren lightsaber?

Hasbro’s Black Series Force FX Deluxe Kylo Ren saber was listed at $139.99 retail, but current stock is (unverified) [10]. The hobby sabers listed above are described as “inspired by” the design [8].

Is a crossguard saber good for sparring?

It depends on the vendor’s rating for that model. One listing rates its model for light dueling [9]. For picks, see best lightsaber.
