Purple Lightsaber: Mace Windu, Mara Jade and Vernestra Rwoh

The purple lightsaber is best known from Mace Windu, whose blade was an actor's request. Canon also has Vernestra Rwoh, whose purple saber can switch to a lightwhip. Mara Jade's purple saber belongs to Legends. Purple has no official meaning, only fan readings.

The purple lightsaber belongs to Mace Windu in the films. Samuel L. Jackson asked for the color so his character would stand out, and it first appears in Attack of the Clones [1]. In canon, Vernestra Rwoh also has a purple saber. Mara Jade’s purple saber is from Legends [2][3][4].

Purple has no official meaning. The popular readings come from fans. This page sorts the purple blades by what is canon, what is Legends, and what is only opinion. For the full range of colors, see the lightsaber colors overview.

Purple is the least crowded of the common colors. The three characters above are the main examples, and the sources we read list only a handful of other owners [7].

Mace Windu

Mace Windu’s purple blade is the one most people mean. The official character page calls him a Jedi Master with an amethyst-bladed saber and lists it among his weapons [5]. Wikipedia credits Jackson with asking for purple, and adds that the choice was meant to help the character stand out [1].

Windu fights on the arena floor of Geonosis in Attack of the Clones [11]. He later confronts Chancellor Palpatine, and on the official page he is killed after Anakin Skywalker severs his forearm and Palpatine strikes him with Force lightning [5].

The film years for these appearances are not repeated here. The official page does not give release years in the text we read [5].

Vernestra Rwoh

Vernestra Rwoh’s saber is a canon purple blade powered by a kyber crystal. A ring just below the emitter toggles it between a saber and a lightwhip [2]. It first appears in the novel The High Republic: A Test of Courage by Justina Ireland [2].

She built the saber well before she became a Jedi Knight. She later added the lightwhip mode after a Force vision and kept the change secret for several weeks [2]. The saber belongs to the High Republic era [2].

A canon-focused wiki lists Vernestra’s saber and Huulik’s saber alongside Mace Windu’s as purple examples [7]. So purple is rare, but Windu is not the only canon owner.

Mara Jade (Legends)

Mara Jade first appears in Timothy Zahn’s 1991 novel Heir to the Empire [3]. She is in the Legends continuity, the label applied to pre-2014 licensed works that Disney declared non-canon in April 2014 [3]. Before that she was an Emperor’s Hand, a special agent for Palpatine [3].

Her saber is described as purple in Legends by merchandise coverage. In March 2025, Disney released a limited run of 3,500 numbered Mara Jade Legacy Lightsaber hilt sets for its parks and online store, with a blade that lights purple [4]. The same news report calls it the first Legacy Lightsaber based on a Legends character who has not been made canon, and lists a launch price of $325 [4].

Wikipedia’s Mara Jade article does not state a blade color [3]. Reports on the exact shade over time vary, and we could not confirm them from a primary source (unverified). The only firm purple link here is the 2025 merchandise [4].

Why purple, and what it means

The purple lightsaber meaning and the Mace Windu lightsaber color question share one answer. Production reasons are the best-sourced answer. Jackson requested the color to stand out [1]. A separate guide repeats that point [8].

For in-universe meaning, the sources are weaker. One guide says purple links both sides of the Force and gives balance between blue and red as the meaning, but it sources that to a retailer’s profile [8]. Another guide labels purple a Legends color and says later lore added a balance meaning [9]. That label sits oddly with Windu and Vernestra, who are canon, so treat both readings as fan interpretation.

In canon, no official rule ties purple to a role. Canon colors in general come from the crystal’s bond with its owner [10].

Purple, violet, magenta and indigo

Product pages and games use several near-purple names. Jedi: Fallen Order, for example, includes indigo and magenta among its blade colors [12]. A seller who calls a blade “purple” may mean any of these.

The difference is mostly about the red component. Magenta leans toward pink, violet leans toward blue, and indigo sits darker and bluer. There is no canon standard that says which one counts as “the” purple. Mace Windu’s blade is described on the official site as amethyst [5], which is a useful anchor: a clear, medium purple.

A blade’s apparent color also changes with room light, the camera and the diffuser tube. A saber that looks purple on a bright shelf can read blue in daylight. Check the maker’s photos in more than one lighting condition.

Can you buy a purple lightsaber?

Yes. Purple is a common option on replica sabers. The easiest way to get it is a pixel-blade saber that can show several colors, so purple is one setting among many. Our neopixel lightsaber guide explains how those blades work.

If you want a saber that matches a specific character’s hilt, check for a licensed replica. Disney’s Mara Jade set above is one example, though it is a limited run and the price may have changed since 2025 [4]. For a general shortlist, see best lightsabers.

Colors that look purple on a product page can be blue-violet or magenta in person. Look at photos of the actual blade in a dim room before you buy.
