Short answer

To find a lightsaber dueling club near you, start with the organisers that publish locators: the LudoSport academy map, the Lightspeed Saber League squadron list and Saber Legion chapters. Then check Meetup, Facebook and Discord. Ask about gear, rules, age limits and cost before your first session.

To find a lightsaber dueling club near you, start with the organisers that publish their own locators. LudoSport has an interactive map of academies and schools [1]. The Lightspeed Saber League has a “find a team” page [5]. The Saber Legion runs local chapters, listed through its own site and Facebook groups [9]. If none of those show a group in your area, search Meetup, Facebook and Discord, and look at convention tournaments.

This page does not list individual local clubs. Chapters open, close and move, and an unchecked list would send people to dead addresses. Instead it points to where the current lists live, what a first session usually involves, and what to ask before you join. Last checked: 2026-11-07.

Where to look first

Step by step: find and vet a club

  1. Open the LudoSport map and the Lightspeed squadron page and look for a location in your region [1][5].
  2. Search for a Saber Legion chapter in your city. Chapter listings name a venue, a weekday and a Facebook or website contact [9].
  3. If nothing appears, search Meetup and Facebook for sparring or saber groups. Be careful with informal groups: Lightspeed itself notes that formations are not managed or insured by the league [5].
  4. Look at convention schedules. The Saber Legion tournament listed on its CombatCon page ran LED saber divisions, which shows conventions are a place to meet local fighters [11].
  5. Message the organiser with the questions in the checklist below before you travel.
  6. Attend the first session as a spectator or beginner and follow the safety rules given there [1][6].

What a first session involves

Formats differ by organiser. The examples below are what organisers describe, not a promise about any club.

  • A Lightspeed beginner class listed on Meetup for 16 December 2023 in Westminster, California ran two hours. It covered handling a lightweight saber and the basic rules of Lightspeed fencing. It stated that safety gear and sabers were included and that participants must be 15 or older and wear clothing they can move and sweat in [8].
  • A Saber Legion chapter listing for Madison, Wisconsin (dated November 2022) described Tuesday evening sparring practice, with loaner gear and foam boffers available [9].
  • St. Louis Magazine reported in December 2025 that a LudoSport studio in the area held beginner classes on weekends, with a discovery class [12].

Expect to start with stance, grip and simple movements before any contact. For what the early basics look like, read how to duel with a lightsaber and how to parry with a lightsaber.

What gear is provided

Clubs differ, so confirm in writing. Examples from the pages read:

  • The Lightspeed beginner class above provided sabers and safety equipment [8].
  • The Madison chapter listing said loaner gear was available and asked attendees to bring their own light-up sabers or gear if they had them [9].
  • Lightspeed requires a fencing mask and lacrosse gloves of at least 4 oz with inner wrist protection for sparring, plus elbow pads, chest and shoulder pads for under 16s [6].
  • LudoSport states that its only mandatory protection is gloves, and groin protection for men, with masks or glasses recommended. It says technique is the first form of safety in its sport [3].
  • A Minnesota Saber Legion group reported in 2018 used street hockey pads, lacrosse gloves and midsection padding [10].

Requirements differ a lot. One league recommends a mask where another requires it, so ask before you assume. If you later want your own blade, see the best lightsaber for dueling, but check first whether your club approves only certain blades, as LudoSport and Lightspeed do [3][6].

Costs as stated by organisers

Prices change, and many organisers publish none. What the pages read showed:

SourceWhat it statedDate of the source
Madison Saber Legion chapter listing$5 indoors to cover the room, or less depending on attendance, and people who cannot afford it are still welcome [9]November 2022
St. Louis Magazine, about a LudoSport studio$10 two-hour discovery class, memberships from $99 per month [12]December 2025 (magazine report, not the studio’s own page)
Lightspeed Meetup beginner classNo price shown on the event page [8]December 2023
LudoSport homepage and locatorNo prices stated [1][2]Read 2026-11-07
Lightspeed Saber LeagueFees not stated on the page read. A financial aid page is linked [6]Read 2026-11-07

Treat all of these as examples, not current quotes. Ask the club for its current fees, including whether dues, insurance or a league registration are extra [5].

Rules and conduct to expect

Rules vary by organiser, which is why the written version matters. Lightspeed bans stabbing from an extended guard, hits to the groin, and upward swings below the waist, and says leg hits must not be powered all the way through [6]. LudoSport says the face is not a valid target and hits are self declared [4]. The 2018 Minnesota report said throat and groin were off limits [10].

Lightspeed says violating its rules can cost a team its league membership [6]. It also asks participants to read its code of conduct and sign a waiver before taking part [7].

What to ask a club before joining

  • What is the written gear list, and what can I borrow?
  • What are the target zones and banned strikes? Is there a written safety document?
  • Is there a waiver, and who holds insurance for sessions?
  • What is the minimum age, and are minors supervised? Sources set age limits that differ, for example 15 or older at one Lightspeed class [8].
  • What blades does the club allow? Can I use my own?
  • How is a bout stopped? Is there someone whose job is to call a stop?
  • What do sessions cost, and are there dues beyond the first visit?
  • Is it competitive, choreographed, or both? Choreography and sparring use different habits, and the safety guidance says to agree which one you are doing before igniting a blade [13].

Sparring partner etiquette

The rules below come from organisers and safety guides, not from personal experience.

  • Hit only a partner who is mentally and physically ready [6].
  • Agree target zones, intensity and stop signals out loud before you start [13].
  • Call a pause when gear loosens, someone repeatedly loses control, or frustration rises [13].
  • Check your blade, retention screws and hilt before each session, and stop if the blade is loose or cracked [13].
  • Do not mix cooperative choreography with reactive sparring in one session without saying so [13].

If you are curious how the film forms compare with real sparring, see the lightsaber forms guide and the form quiz. Both are fiction based, and real clubs teach their own curricula. More choices sit in the Dueling hub. For costume and event wear, see the cosplay guide.

FAQ

Is there a lightsaber dueling club near me?

Check the LudoSport map, the Lightspeed squadron page, and Saber Legion chapter listings first, then Meetup, Facebook and Discord [1][5][9]. LudoSport is listed in 13 nations and the featured Lightspeed groups are mostly in the US, so coverage depends on where you live [4][5].

Are lightsaber clubs real martial arts?

They are organised saber sports. LudoSport is described as a semi-contact sport with its own curriculum and exams, and Lightspeed describes a fencing league with safety rules [4][6].

Do I need my own lightsaber to join?

Often no. A Lightspeed beginner class provided sabers and safety gear, and the Madison chapter listing mentioned loaner gear [8][9]. Ask the club, and do not buy a blade first [3].

How much do lightsaber classes cost?

It varies and many pages list no price. Examples read: $5 for an indoor chapter session in 2022 and a $10 discovery class with memberships from $99 per month in 2025 [9][12].

Can children join?

Age limits vary. One Lightspeed class required 15 or older, and Lightspeed lists extra padding for under 16s [6][8]. Ask the club directly.

Are the film forms taught at clubs?

LudoSport numbers its own seven forms and style exams, separate from the film forms [4]. See lightsaber forms for the fictional ones.
