Lightsaber Blade Length: 32 vs 36 Inch and How to Choose
Most vendors treat 36 inches as the standard adult blade and 32 inches as the pick for shorter or younger users and for tight spaces. Choose by height, space and use, then check the hilt's blade diameter and socket depth, because the usable length is shorter than the listing.
Short answer
Most vendors treat 36 inches as the standard adult blade and 32 inches as the pick for shorter or younger users and for tight spaces. Choose by height, space and use, then check the hilt's blade diameter and socket depth, because the usable length is shorter than the listing.

Lightsaber blade length for most adults is 36 inches (about 92 cm), which Ultrasabers lists as its standard size [1]. A 32 inch (about 82 cm) blade is the usual choice for people under about 55 inches tall, and Theory Sabers describes it as the dueling length [1][2]. Pick by height, available space and use, then check the hilt’s diameter, because a blade that does not match the hilt will not fit.
Average lightsaber blade length
There is no census of what people own, so “average” really means what vendors treat as standard. Theory Sabers puts the standard blade at roughly one meter, 91 cm or 36 inches [2]. Ultrasabers calls 36 inches its standard length and lists custom sizes from 4 inches up to 40 inches [1]. The Korbanth pixel blade ships by default at 34 to 36 inches, with 30 inches on request [6].
The hilt adds to the total. Ultrasabers says the hilt and pommel can add up to 20 inches, depending on the design [1]. Theory Sabers gives a typical hilt of 10 to 12 inches, which brings a standard saber to nearly four feet [2].
32 vs 36 inch lightsaber blade
The choice is reach against control. Theory Sabers says blade length affects speed, reach and control, that taller combatants prefer a longer standard blade, and that the shorter 82 cm (32 inch) blade fits ritualized or competitive duels [2]. Ultrasabers says users under 55 inches tall often end up with a 32 inch blade whatever grade they pick, and taller users tend to take 36 inches or more [1]. The Saber Factory adds that shorter or younger duelists often get better control from a shorter blade, while taller users may like the reach of a longer one [4].
| 32 inch (about 82 cm) | 36 inch (about 92 cm) | |
|---|---|---|
| Vendor position | Often chosen under 55 inches tall [1] | Standard adult length [1] |
| Reach | Shorter | Longer, favoured by taller users [2][4] |
| Control and space | Easier to control in tight spaces [4] | Needs more room [3] |
| Against league lengths | Under the 34 inch league long saber [8] | Longer than the 34 inch league long saber [8] |
| Where it fits | Dueling, shorter users, indoor swinging | Display, taller users, a standard look |
What changes at 28, 30 and 37 inches
28 inches. The closest sport match is a short blade. LudoSport lists 725 to 735 mm (about 28.5 inches) at each end of its double-bladed saberstaff [8]. Its short sabers, used in pairs, are 595 to 605 mm, about 23.5 inches [8]. Theory Sabers describes shoto blades at around 60 cm (2 feet) [2].
30 inches. This is a common alternate size. Korbanth offers 30 inches on request for both 1 inch and 7/8 inch pixel blades [6], and Vader’s Vault sells its 7/8 inch Photon Blade at 30, 32, 34 and 36 inches [7].
37 inches. No vendor page read for this guide lists 37 inches as a standard size. The number usually comes from a measuring mismatch: a listed 36 inch blade can look longer or shorter depending on how it is measured, and Ultrasabers notes a blade loses 1 to 3 inches once seated in the hilt [5]. Custom blades up to 40 inches exist at Ultrasabers [1]. Ask the seller whether the stated length includes the part inside the hilt.
Blade length for dueling
For contact sport, the leagues set the numbers, not the shop. LudoSport’s long saber has a blade of 865 to 875 mm (about 34 inches) and a hilt of 258 to 322 mm [8]. Its blade is polycarbonate, 25 mm in diameter with a 2 mm wall [8]. Lightspeed Saber League names only its 3/4 inch outer diameter blade as appropriate for its fencing and does not state a length on the rules page [9]. Theory Sabers notes that sanctioned competition requires combat sabers that meet size and weight rules, and that many leagues require a standard diameter, often 3/4 inch [3].
A tournament saber is therefore not a 36 inch retail saber. If you plan to join a club, ask for its written blade and weight limits before you buy, and read our best lightsaber for dueling guide for blade grades. For technique that suits either length, see how to parry with a lightsaber.
| League weapon | Blade length | Hilt length | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long saber | 865 to 875 mm | 258 to 322 mm | [8] |
| Saberstaff, each end | 725 to 735 mm | 358 to 542 mm | [8] |
| Short sabers | 595 to 605 mm | 178 to 262 mm | [8] |
Display versus dueling
Use also changes the answer. The Saber Factory says to match the saber to the activity: a duel-ready saber with a heavy-grade blade for contact, comfort and control for cosplay and choreography, and secure mounting and battery care for display [4]. A display saber can take the longer, more screen-like length. A contact saber should follow the limits of the club you join. If the saber will hang on a wall, check the mount spacing in our wall mount guide first.
Double-bladed and dual-wield lengths
A double-bladed saber has a full length blade at each end. Theory Sabers puts the combined reach at over 6 feet when both are lit [2]. League staffs use shorter blades, as in the 725 to 735 mm ends above [8]. A double-bladed saber also needs extra room and slower practice, because of self-strikes [3]. For the weapon itself, see double-bladed lightsabers.
Dual wield means two single sabers, one in each hand. The sources give no single length. LudoSport’s paired short sabers are about 23.5 inches each [8], and Theory Sabers mentions shoto sabers as off-hand weapons [2]. Theory Sabers also says to practice with the non-dominant hand, especially for dual wielding [3]. A shorter second blade is easier to control, but any blade combination is your own judgment, not a rule.
Diameter and replacement blade compatibility
A blade must match the hilt’s socket. Ultrasabers lists its 16 inch midgrade blade at 1 inch outside diameter, notes that some hilt lines (Archon v3.1, Princess and Rebel) need a heavy grade blade instead, and says usable length depends on the hilt’s socket depth [5]. Korbanth sells pixel blades in 1 inch and 7/8 inch for pixel-installed sabers [6]. Vader’s Vault sells a 7/8 inch blade separately [7]. Theory Sabers notes adapters may be needed to fit certain hilts [3].
Baselit and pixel blades are not interchangeable either. A pixel blade fits sabers with pixel electronics [6], and The Saber Factory suggests a neopixel-to-baselit adapter plus a spare baselit blade for owners who want to duel [4]. Read our baselit vs neopixel guide before swapping. For the hilt side, see lightsaber hilts.
How to choose a blade length
No source gives a formula based on arm length. A sword-sizing guide says height is only a starting point and that arm length, hand size, strength and the intended use all count [10]. Treat the steps below as a checklist, not a standard.
- Check your club or league first. If you plan to spar, its blade length and diameter come before anything else [3][8][9].
- Check your hilt. Note its diameter (1 inch, 7/8 inch or 3/4 inch) and what blade type it takes [5][6].
- If you are under about 55 inches tall, or a young beginner, start at 32 inches or shorter [1][4].
- If you are an adult of average to tall height, 36 inches is the vendor standard [1]. Many adults still prefer 32 inches for control [4].
- If you will swing indoors, choose the shorter blade and clear the room [3].
- If it is for display or cosplay, pick for looks, and remember it will hang on a wall or stand [4].
- Measure before you order. Ask whether the stated length is exposed length or total length [5].

FAQ
Is a 32 inch or 36 inch lightsaber better?
Neither wins outright. 36 inches is the common standard and gives reach, while shorter users and duelists often pick 32 inches for control [1][2][4]. Your use and your club’s rules decide.
What is the average lightsaber blade length?
Vendors treat 36 inches (about 92 cm) as the standard [1][2]. There is no survey of what people actually own.
What is the best lightsaber blade length for dueling?
For sport, follow the league. LudoSport uses a blade of roughly 34 inches for its long saber [8]. For retail sabers, Theory Sabers describes about 32 inches as a dueling length [2].
Do I need a 7/8 inch or a 1 inch blade?
Whichever your hilt takes. Vendors sell both sizes, and Lightspeed uses a 3/4 inch outside diameter [6][7][9].
How long should a dual wield or double-bladed blade be?
League examples use about 28.5 inch ends on a staff and about 23.5 inch blades in pairs [8]. For free play, shorter blades are easier to control [2].
What is an amber lightsaber?
Amber is a colour name, not a length. See orange lightsabers and yellow lightsabers for the colour side.

How to Parry With a Lightsaber: Real Sword Technique
To parry with a lightsaber, meet the incoming blade with the strong part of your own, using a small, controlled movement, then follow with a riposte. The method comes from fencing, kendo and HEMA, and you can practice it with real polycarbonate blades, slowly and in protective gear.
