A retractable lightsaber is one whose blade slides out of the hilt and back in. It exists in three forms. Toy sabers use nested telescoping tubes. Hobbyists build motorised versions with a coiled steel blade. Disney showed a motorised tape blade as a park prop, and it was not for sale [1][5][7][10]. A ready-made hobby grade retractable saber was not confirmed in this research. If you want the film look of a blade that appears and disappears, a pixel saber does that with light, not moving parts.

What a retractable lightsaber is
“Retractable” means two things in searches. Some people mean the blade of light shortens into the hilt, as in the films. Others mean a physical blade that telescopes or unrolls. This page is about the physical kind. See types of lightsabers for how the retractable type sits among the other designs.
What exists
| Kind | How the blade moves | Sold today? |
|---|---|---|
| Telescoping toy | Nested tubes slide out of the hilt [9][10] | Costume shops list telescoping models [9] |
| DIY motorised build | Spring steel cane carries LED strips, motor drives it [1] | No kit or price stated by sources checked [1][2] |
| Disney park prop | Motorised tape of LEDs winds on a spool [5][7] | Not for sale at reveal [7] |
| Licensed fixed blade sabers | Blade does not retract [8][9] | Yes, see prices below |
A hobby shop’s page titled “retractable lightsaber” also exists on ziasabers.com. It did not load during this research, so nothing from it is used here and its price and mechanism are unverified.
Telescoping toys
The oldest example is a toy. Kenner’s first Luke Skywalker figures in 1978 came with a two piece telescoping saber, which was quickly replaced by a one piece accessory [10]. Collectors still sort loose figures by saber type, listing the double telescoping version as the rarer one [11].
Today a costume retailer’s lightsaber page mentions basic telescoping sabers alongside a series with polycarbonate blades, without saying which listing is which [9]. The page lists lightsaber accessories from $19.99 to $39.99 as of November 2026, and an Elite Force FX Obi-Wan replica at $199.99, out of stock [9]. Treat those as the cost range of costume toys, not a guide to any one model.

DIY retractable builds
Make magazine covered HeroTech’s build. A springy aluminium magician’s cane carries the LED strips. It extends to just over 3 feet and retracts into the hilt, driven by a geared motor with a 1:90 ratio. A Seeed XIAO RP2040 and a motor driver run the motor, and a Proffieboard V3.9 handles ignition, sound and the retraction effect [1]. The hilt is 3D printed in ABS with a base just under 2 inches across [1].
TechEBlog describes the same family of builds with a coiled spring steel sheet released by a pin, and says HeroTech planned a next version with the LED strip rotating inside the sheath [2]. Neither article states a kit, plan or price [1][2].
This is a project for someone who already solders and prints parts. See build your own lightsaber and the parts list for the normal build, which uses a fixed blade.
Disney and licensed retractables
Disney’s patent, titled “Sword Device with Retractable, Internally Illuminated Blade”, puts LEDs on a tape that winds onto a spool as the blade retracts, like a motorised tape measure [5]. Disney Imagineering showed a working retractable saber on 4 May 2021 [6][7]. It was shown for the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel, and Syfy reported that it did not sound like it would be sold [6][7]. Engadget said a sale was possible but uncertain and would likely cost a lot [6].
The licensed sabers you can buy are fixed blade. The Disney Store lists an Obi-Wan Kenobi Legacy set at $249.99 as of November 2026, with a 31 inch blade, a belt clip and a stand. The page does not describe it as retractable [8]. Hasbro’s Black Series Force FX Elite has a removable blade, as covered in the Black Series guide. Neither page describes an extending blade [8][9].
Canon examples
Star Wars has a related idea, and it is a change of blade length rather than a hilt that swallows a blade.
- Canon: the dual-phase lightsaber lets the wielder extend or shorten the blade mid fight using two or more kyber crystals. Darth Vader’s lightsaber is given as an example with two crystals [3].
- Legends: the dual-phase saber could extend up to triple its length. Owners listed include Dooku, Exar Kun, Gantoris and Corran Horn [4].
Neither entry describes a blade that physically slides in. No other canon retracting hilt was found in the pages checked [3][4]. See every lightsaber by film for what appears on screen.
Availability and price
Confirmed this month: costume accessories at $19.99 to $39.99, a Legacy set at $249.99 and a replica at $199.99 out of stock, all fixed blade or unspecified [8][9]. Not confirmed: any price for a hobby grade retractable, a HeroTech kit, or a Disney prop for sale [1][2][7].
If a seller lists a retractable saber at a hobby price, ask for a video of the mechanism running, the blade material and the battery type.
Durability and safety
No independent durability data was found for any retractable saber. The mechanisms add moving parts. Telescoping toys have joints, the cane build needs a spool and bearings to avoid fouling [1], and Kenner replaced its two piece toy with a one piece one, although the page checked does not say why [10].
The DIY battery is also a concern. A 14.8 V four cell pack stores more energy than the single 18650 in most hobby sabers [1]. Use a protected pack, a proper charger and a hilt with room to vent [13]. See lightsaber batteries.
How to decide
Decide in this order:
- Do you want a prop for cosplay photos? Choose a telescoping toy and check reviews for jams [9].
- Do you want the film feel with light and sound? Choose a pixel saber. The blade lights and goes dark as an effect, with no moving parts. See neopixel lightsaber and best lightsaber.
- Is it for a child? Choose by age label and follow best lightsaber for kids.
- Do you build electronics? A HeroTech style build is possible, but plan for a motor, a Proffieboard and a lithium pack [1].
- Do you collect licensed items? Expect fixed blades and check the stated price [8].
- Do you duel? Do not choose retractable. Use best lightsaber for dueling.

FAQ
Is a retractable lightsaber real?
Yes, as DIY builds, toys and a Disney prop. HeroTech’s build was covered by Make [1]. A ready-made hobby grade one was not confirmed.
Can you buy a retractable lightsaber?
Telescoping toy versions are sold by costume shops [9]. A motorised version was not found for sale. Disney’s was not for sale when shown [7].
How much does a retractable lightsaber cost?
Costume accessories were $19.99 to $39.99 as of November 2026 on one retailer page [9]. No price was found for a motorised build or kit [1][2].
Are retractable lightsabers canon?
The canon dual-phase lightsaber changes blade length. It is not a hilt that swallows a blade [3]. The Legends version could reach triple length [4].
Can you duel with a retractable lightsaber?
Not advised. Telescoping and spool mechanisms add joints and no source tested them under impact. See dueling sabers.
What is the difference between retractable and pixel?
A retractable blade moves physically. A pixel blade is fixed and lit along its length, as covered in neopixel lightsaber.

Types of Lightsabers: Every Design, Who Uses It, What You Can Buy
The main types of lightsabers are single blade, double-bladed, crossguard, curved hilt, shoto, lightwhip and pike, plus rarer designs like the Darksaber. Most have a real hobby version. Retractable blades are the exception: only DIY builds turned up in the research for this page.
Best Lightsaber to Buy in 2026: Picks by Use and Budget
There is no single best lightsaber, so this list picks one per use: Xenopixel for a first serious saber, baselit for duelling and kids, a licensed Hasbro replica for the shelf, Proffieboard for DIY. Specs, price bands and warranty terms from vendor pages.
Best Lightsaber for Kids: Safe Picks by Age and Budget
The best lightsaber for kids depends on age. Under about 8, choose a plastic or foam toy lightsaber with a printed age label. From about 8 to 12, a small, light baselit saber with an adult nearby. Metal duelling sabers are sold for teens and adults. Read the age label first.
