Baselit vs Neopixel Lightsaber: Light, Durability and Cost
A baselit lightsaber, also called in-hilt, puts one LED in the hilt and sends light up a hollow tube. A neopixel blade carries an LED strip inside. Baselit is cheaper, lighter and the safer pick for hard dueling. Neopixel is brighter along the whole blade and does the film-style ignition.
Short answer
A baselit lightsaber, also called in-hilt, puts one LED in the hilt and sends light up a hollow tube. A neopixel blade carries an LED strip inside. Baselit is cheaper, lighter and the safer pick for hard dueling. Neopixel is brighter along the whole blade and does the film-style ignition.

A baselit lightsaber puts the LED in the hilt and lights a hollow tube from below. A neopixel blade has a strip of many small LEDs inside the tube. Choose baselit for hard dueling, kids, a tight budget or long battery life. Choose neopixel for even brightness, film-style ignition and display. “In-hilt” is another name for baselit [4][11].

Baselit, in-hilt and neopixel in one table
Shops use “baselit” and “in-hilt” for the same design: the light source sits in the hilt and shines up a hollow blade. Our handbook glossary lists them as one idea [11]. NovaSaber’s comparison table is headed “Baselit / in-hilt RGB” [4]. A third term, “pixel-in-hilt”, turns up in forum talk. We found no vendor page that defines it, so we leave it out (unverified) [12].
| Baselit (in-hilt) | Neopixel (pixel blade) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the light is made | LED in the hilt, shining up the tube | LED strip running the length of the blade |
| LED figure on one vendor spec table | 12 W RGB LED | 50 W LED strip [1] |
| Brightness along the blade | Brightest near the hilt, dimmer at the tip [3][1] | Even from hilt to tip [3][4] |
| Blade modes and effects (same table) | 3 modes, 3 effects | 12 modes, 8 effects [2] |
| Dueling rating (same vendor) | High | Medium [1] |
| Battery in that vendor’s tiers | 3000 mAh, 1 to 3 hours | 3600 mAh, 30 to 90 minutes [1] |
| Replacement blade (36 in, one shop) | $59.99, as of November 2026 [9] | $109.99, as of November 2026 [8] |
Most numbers above come from shops that sell both types, so read them as vendor claims. Two of the rows come from one brand’s tiers and will differ on other brands.
How each one makes light
In a baselit saber, a high-power LED in the hilt shines up into a hollow polycarbonate blade, which spreads the light. Nothing electronic sits in the blade [1][4].
A neopixel blade holds an LED strip along its length. Ultrasabers describes more than 100 RGB LEDs, each one controllable [3]. Because the board can address each LED, it can show an ignition that travels up the blade, a flash only where the blades touch, flicker and other animations [3][4].
SabersPro and Padawan Outpost explain the same split but give no brightness figures, runtimes or blade prices [6][7].
The blade does not play sound. The board in the hilt does that, and a baselit or a neopixel saber can have the same board. For board choices, see Xenopixel vs Neopixel and the soundboards guide.
Blade structure
A baselit blade is a plain tube. One brand’s page lists a 2 mm wall for its baselit blade and 3 mm for its neopixel blade [5], so the pixel tube can be the thicker of the two. A neopixel blade adds a strip, wiring and a connector at the base that must meet contacts in the hilt [4][5].
That connector is why blades are not freely swappable. One shop lists its neopixel replacement for Proffie sabers and tells buyers to check compatibility first [8]. Another says its basic RGB blade “will only fit your Basic Type saber” [9]. Match the blade to the hilt maker’s system before you order.
Brightness profile
Baselit light is strongest at the hilt and fades toward the tip, and longer blades fade more [1][3]. Neopixel aims for an even glow from base to tip [3]. The Saber Factory rates baselit brightness Medium and neopixel High [1]. No source we opened gives measured brightness, so treat “brighter” as a claim.
Durability
Baselit is the simpler blade, so most sellers steer hard dueling to it. The Saber Factory rates baselit High for dueling and neopixel Medium, saying strips can break under stress [1][2]. NovaSaber says the internal LEDs and connections raise the risk of damage from repeated heavy impacts [4]. Ultrasabers calls a sturdy polycarbonate neopixel blade suitable for most dueling, and advises a heavy-grade blade for full contact [3].
Not every seller agrees on the size of the gap. KenJo Sabers published a strength video of its own neopixel saber, struck against bars and stone, and says the gap to baselit is minimal. Its account has no force measurements and compares no baselit blade side by side [5].

Cost to replace a blade
The listed gap is large. NSabers lists a 36 in, 1 in neopixel replacement blade at $109.99 and a 36 in basic RGB blade at $59.99, both sale prices as of November 2026 [8][9]. The neopixel blade costs about 1.8 times as much. The Saber Factory writes that destroying a pixel strip could roughly triple a replacement bill but gives no figure [2], so that is a vendor estimate.
Two cautions apply. These blades fit different hilt systems, so the pair is a price guide, not a swap [8][9]. And NSabers states its accessories are final sale [8][9]. Over a few years of dueling, the cheaper blade can matter more than the saber price.
Complete sabers also differ in price, but we did not find a clean like-for-like pair. For prices by tier, see the neopixel guide and lightsabers under $100.
Effects and battery
Neopixel gives the richer show: progressive ignition and retraction, flicker, pulse, clash flashes, blade lock and tip drag, depending on the board [4]. Baselit offers whole-blade colour, flash on clash and blaster effects [2].
Neopixel also draws more power. Ultrasabers says pixel sabers drain batteries significantly faster than standard ones [3]. One vendor lists 30 to 90 minutes for its pixel tier against 1 to 3 hours for its baselit tier, with a bigger cell in the pixel saber [1]. Both use lithium-ion cells.
Who each type suits
- Baselit pros: lower price, lower blade cost, longer runtime, favoured by sellers for hard dueling and for beginners [1][2][3].
- Baselit cons: light fades toward the tip, fewer effects, no travelling ignition [1][2].
- Neopixel pros: even brightness, animated ignition, local clash flash, many colour and style options [3][4].
- Neopixel cons: higher blade cost, shorter runtime, more care needed in hard contact [1][3][4].
Sellers place baselit with duelists, beginners, younger users and budget buyers, and neopixel with cosplayers, collectors and content creators [2][3]. Ultrasabers adds that many novices start basic and move to pixels later [3].
How to choose
- Will the saber take hard hits? Yes: choose baselit, thick blade. No: go to step 2.
- Is the buyer a child? Choose baselit for the lower blade cost, and see best lightsabers for kids.
- Is the ceiling under about $100? Check best lightsabers under $100 first.
- Do you want film-style ignition, photos or a costume? Choose neopixel, and read cosplay and costume lightsabers.
- Will you run it for hours at an event? Baselit lasts longer on a charge, or carry a spare cell [1][3].
- Still undecided? Many buyers want one saber for display and light play. Pick neopixel with a heavy-grade blade and keep it to light contact [3].

FAQ
Is baselit the same as in-hilt?
Yes, in shop usage. Both mean an LED in the hilt lighting a hollow blade [4][11].
Is baselit better than neopixel?
For hard dueling, vendors say yes [1][2]. For looks and effects, neopixel wins [3][4].
Can I put a neopixel blade in a baselit saber?
Not by default. The hilt needs pixel-capable electronics and matching contacts. Ask the maker, and see installing electronics.
Do neopixel blades break easily?
Vendors differ. Some rate them Medium for dueling [1], some say the gap is minimal [5]. No independent test was found.
Does a baselit saber have fewer sound fonts?
Not necessarily. One vendor lists 34 built-in fonts on both its baselit and pixel tiers [2]. See sound fonts.
Is neopixel a brand?
The word NeoPixel is a trademark of Adafruit. In saber shops it means any addressable LED strip blade [12].

Xenopixel vs Neopixel: What the Difference Is and Which to Buy
Xenopixel is not a rival to neopixel. Neopixel is the blade type, a strip of individually addressable LEDs. Xenopixel is a ready-made board that drives that strip. The real choice is Xenopixel versus Proffieboard, Golden Harvest v4 or CFX. Xenopixel is cheaper and simpler, Proffie is more customisable.
Neopixel Lightsaber: What It Is and Which One to Buy
A neopixel lightsaber has an LED strip inside the blade, so the glow is even from hilt to tip and the blade can animate. Entry models start around $180, mid-range around $320 to $400, Proffie sabers from about $400. Duelling needs a tougher blade.
Best Lightsaber for Dueling: Blade, Models and Protective Gear
For hard contact, pick a baselit saber with a thick-walled polycarbonate blade, 2 mm at least and 3 mm for heavy sparring. Pixel blades suit light contact and choreography. Below: vendor-listed duel-ready models with prices as of November 2026, what to check, and the gear to buy.
