Yellow Lightsaber: Rey, Temple Guards and Sentinels
The yellow lightsaber is rare in canon. Rey builds one at the end of The Rise of Skywalker, Jedi Temple Guards carry twin-bladed yellow pikes, and Yord Fandar and Asajj Ventress have yellow blades too. The Sentinel meaning belongs to Legends. No canon source I read explains Rey's color.

The yellow lightsaber is the best-known rare color. Rey builds one at the end of The Rise of Skywalker, and its live-action debut is that scene [1][3]. Jedi Temple Guards carry twin-bladed yellow pikes [3][4]. Yord Fandar, Asajj Ventress and one of Luke’s sabers are yellow in canon [5][6][7]. The yellow lightsaber meaning most guides give, the “Sentinel” color, is a Legends idea from a role-playing game, and no canon source I read gives Rey a reason for yellow [8][9].
Yellow is also scarce on the biggest fan wiki: 42 pages in its yellow category, against 158 for blue and 120 for green, with Legends included [10]. Last checked: November 7, 2026. For all colors side by side, see the lightsaber colors overview. Sister pages: blue, green, red, white and orange.
Who has a yellow lightsaber
| Character or group | Continuity | Where | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rey | Canon | The Rise of Skywalker | Built from parts of her staff; the film’s final scene [1][11] |
| Jedi Temple Guards | Canon | The Clone Wars, episode “Sabotage” (aired February 9, 2013) | Twin-bladed lightsaber pike [4] |
| Yord Fandar | Canon | The Acolyte | Single yellow blade; killed in 132 BBY [5] |
| Asajj Ventress | Canon | Dark Disciple (novel), later The Bad Batch | Bought on the black market [6] |
| Luke Skywalker | Canon | Star Wars (2020) #6 (comic) | A damaged pike he finds on Tempes in 3 ABY and repairs to one blade [7] |
| Bastila Shan | Legends | Knights of the Old Republic (game) | Double-bladed yellow saber [12] |
| Jaden Korr | Legends | Novels Crosscurrent and Riptide | Third saber, yellow [13] |
| Jedi Sentinels | Legends | Knights of the Old Republic and the tabletop game | Class “mostly signified” by yellow blades [8] |
Ahsoka Tano’s shoto is often called yellow. Sources describe it as yellow-green and disagree on how yellow it is [14]. It is left out of the table for that reason.
Rey and The Rise of Skywalker
Rey’s yellow lightsaber was built after the First Order-Resistance War. It has a kyber crystal, a cylindrical hilt made from parts of her quarterstaff and a cloth grip [11]. The film opened in the United States on December 20, 2019 [15].
She unveils it on Tatooine after burying Luke’s and Leia’s sabers at the old Lars homestead. In the same scene she gives her name as Rey Skywalker [11][15]. The Wookieepedia entry notes that green and blue flash very briefly in the emitter just before the blade ignites [11].
No source I read gives an official reason for yellow. The Wookieepedia entry lists the yellow color from the junior novelization and offers no explanation [11]. Writers have read it as a sign of balance, or of Rey being a new kind of Jedi. Looper ties it to the Sentinel class, but the page does not label that link as Legends [16]. PinkNews presents the balance reading as fact without a canon citation [17]. All of these are interpretation.
Temple Guards and the yellow pike
The Jedi Temple Guards protect the Temple on Coruscant. They wear pale robes and masks, and carry lightsaber pikes: staffs with two rare yellow blades, one at each end [4]. They first appear in the Clone Wars episode “Sabotage” [4]. The pike itself first appeared earlier, in the 2008 Legends novel The Force Unleashed [18].
A pike is a lightsaber variant similar to a double-bladed one, built on a thick staff, and Looper notes the weapon belongs to the post, not to one guard [16][18]. For the standard staff, see the double-bladed lightsaber guide. For the type compared with other hilts, see types of lightsabers.
Luke finds a damaged pike in an abandoned Jedi outpost on Tempes in the comics. He repairs it to one blade and uses it against the Grand Inquisitor’s spirit [7].
Other canon yellow sabers
Yord Fandar, the Jedi Knight in The Acolyte, carries a single yellow blade in a cylindrical hilt. He dies on Khofar in 132 BBY at the hands of the Stranger [5]. It is the clearest recent canon example of a yellow blade carried by an ordinary Jedi.
Asajj Ventress acquired a yellow-bladed saber on the black market after her original red sabers were stolen. It first appears in the novel Dark Disciple. A new design appears in The Bad Batch [6].
That is a short list, which matches the small category count above [10].
What yellow means in canon and Legends
In canon, yellow has no assigned meaning. The Databank says a crystal takes its color when a Jedi attunes it, usually blue or green [2]. Wookieepedia lists yellow blades in the animated series and, in live action, only from The Rise of Skywalker [3].
Legends is where the Sentinel lightsaber link comes from. Wookieepedia says the Sentinel class was created for the Knights of the Old Republic video game and later added to a tabletop rulebook, and the class is “mostly signified” by yellow blades [8]. Sentinels sit between combat-minded Guardians and Force-minded Consulars, and add practical skills such as security, repair and medicine [8][19]. Bastila Shan is the most notable Sentinel in that continuity [8].
Canon has a Jedi Sentinel group too, but the entry I read gives no blade color [9]. CBR and Looper both link yellow to Sentinels, and neither says whether that is canon [16][20].
How a yellow blade is made
In canon, a kyber crystal sets the color [2][26]. A real blade needs an emitter, and yellow is a hard color to get.
Light the eye calls yellow sits around 570 to 590 nm [21]. The Lumileds LUXEON Rebel datasheet has no part named yellow. It jumps from Lime at 566 to 569 nm (184 lumens typical at 350 mA) to Amber at 585 to 595 nm (95 lumens) and PC Amber at 594 to 604 nm (110 lumens) [22]. A saber builder who wants yellow in an in-hilt emitter picks between yellow-green and orange-yellow. See the blade color guide for those parts.
Amber is made of aluminum indium gallium phosphide and its wavelength drifts about 0.10 nm per degree C, so a hot, poorly cooled emitter looks more orange as it warms. PC Amber, a phosphor-converted part, drifts almost nothing [22].
On a pixel saber, yellow is red plus green at full strength, written (255, 255, 0) in RGB [21]. Pixels build yellow from two emitters, while the datasheet LED emits yellow-orange from one. A pixel yellow and an amber LED are not the same light.
Real yellow lightsabers
Yellow is a standard option on pixel sabers, where color is a software setting. See Neopixel lightsabers and Xenopixel versus Neopixel.
Licensed replicas are thinner. Hasbro made a Black Series Force FX Elite replica of Rey’s saber, with pre-orders at $264.99 in September 2021 [23]. I could not open an official product page for it (the Hasbro Pulse URL returned a 404), so availability and current price are unverified. Savi’s Workshop at Disneyland offers blue, green, violet and red kyber crystals. Yellow is not one of the four [24].

Which yellow to pick
- If you want Rey’s look, find a replica of her hilt and accept that availability is unverified [23].
- If you want yellow and other colors, buy a pixel saber.
- If you want a Temple Guard look, you need a double-bladed or pike-style saber: see double-bladed lightsaber.
- If your yellow looks green or orange on camera, read the blade color guide.
- If you cosplay, see lightsaber cosplay and costume.

FAQ
Who has a yellow lightsaber in Star Wars?
In canon, Rey, the Jedi Temple Guards, Yord Fandar, Asajj Ventress and one of Luke’s comic sabers [3][4][5][6][7]. In Legends, Bastila Shan and Jaden Korr [12][13].
What does a yellow lightsaber mean?
Nothing official in canon. Legends tied yellow to the Sentinel class [8]. Fan readings of Rey’s blade as balance are interpretation [16][17].
Why is Rey’s lightsaber yellow?
I found no official statement. The Wookieepedia entry lists the color and the staff origin without a reason [11].
Are Temple Guard sabers really yellow?
Yes. The lightsaber pike has two rare yellow blades [4].
Is the Jedi Sentinel yellow canon?
The class idea is Legends, from a game and a rulebook [8]. Canon has a Sentinel group, but its entry names no color [9].
Can I buy a yellow lightsaber?
Yes, on pixel sabers where color is software. Licensed yellow replicas are harder to confirm [23][24].

Best Lightsaber to Buy in 2026: Picks by Use and Budget
There is no single best lightsaber, so this list picks one per use: Xenopixel for a first serious saber, baselit for duelling and kids, a licensed Hasbro replica for the shelf, Proffieboard for DIY. Specs, price bands and warranty terms from vendor pages.
Lightsaber Colors and What They Mean: Canon vs Legends
Lightsaber colors come from the kyber crystal inside the hilt. Blue and green are the common Jedi colors, red marks a corrupted crystal, and purple, yellow, white, orange and black are rarer. In canon, color has no fixed rule. Most 'meanings' come from Legends or fans.
How to Choose a Lightsaber Blade Color: LED and Pixel Guide
Pick a blade color by wavelength and brightness, not by name. Lime and green LEDs give the most light, blue and deep red give the least, and cameras exaggerate blue. Pixel blades set color in software. In-hilt LEDs fix it in the emitter. Watts claimed on a listing say little.
