Red Lightsaber: Who Carries One, What It Means and How to Get One
A red lightsaber means a kyber crystal that was bled, forced to turn red by pain and anger on the dark side. Sith, Inquisitors and Kylo Ren carry red blades in canon. Legends used synthetic red crystals instead. Red is a sign of a crystal's history, not a verdict on its owner.

A red lightsaber is the blade of a kyber crystal that a dark side user has bled. In canon, bleeding means forcing the crystal to turn red with pain, anger and hate, and the result is the signature blade of the Sith and the Inquisitors [1][2][3]. Red is not exclusive to villains, and in Legends the Sith made their red blades with synthetic crystals instead [4]. Below: who carries red, when, and how to get a red blade of your own. For every color, see the lightsaber colors overview. The matching Jedi color is on the green lightsaber page.

Who carries a red lightsaber
The table runs by story era. “Canon” is the current official continuity. “Legends” is the label for licensed stories from before the April 2014 reset [1].
| Carrier | Continuity | Film or series | Era | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Darth Vader | Canon | A New Hope (1977) onward [1][7] | Imperial | Red was chosen in post production to tell the blades apart [7] |
| Darth Sidious | Canon | Revenge of the Sith, The Clone Wars [17] | Clone Wars to Imperial | Carries two sabers [17] |
| Darth Maul (double blade) | Canon | The Phantom Menace (1999) [9] | Prequel | First dual-bladed saber on film [1] |
| Darth Maul (later saber) | Canon | Rebels, “Twilight of the Apprentice” (2016) [10] | Imperial | Two red blades from a bent Inquisitor-style hilt [10] |

How a crystal turns red in canon
Kyber crystals are described as naturally aligned with the light side. A dark side user cannot simply pick one. In the canon account, the crystal is first taken from a Jedi the user has beaten, then forced to bleed with rage, hate, fear and pain until it turns crimson [2][3].
The process can fail. Darth Vader’s first attempt gave him intense light side visions, and the crystal resisted until he overpowered it. Kylo Ren’s crystal cracked, which is why his blade is unstable and why the crossguard vents the extra energy [2][14].
Bleeding can also be undone. A light side user can purify a bled crystal, and the usual result is a white blade, as with Ahsoka Tano’s sabers [2]. See the white lightsaber page.
The timeline matters. A Clone Wars episode, “A Test of Strength”, first identified kyber crystals as a lightsaber component [3]. Bleeding itself is newer: it was first mentioned in the 2016 novel Ahsoka and first shown in the 2017 comic Darth Vader, issue 5 [2]. So the idea that red means a bled crystal did not come from the original films. Those only showed blue for Jedi and red for Sith [1].
Red in Legends
Legends handled red differently. In that continuity, Jedi mostly used natural crystals from places like Ilum, which were blue or green. The Sith, from the time of the Sith Emperor onward, used synthetic crystals that gave red blades [4]. One Legends account says Darth Maul used a furnace to make his own crystals [4].
Canon uses the same words for a different thing. In canon, synthetic kyber crystals are illegal, unstable and explosive, and the Wookieepedia entry describes them as green [5]. Do not mix the two when you read a character page.
What each carrier shows
Darth Vader and Darth Sidious
Vader’s blade is the original red lightsaber. When the filmmakers decided to give each blade its own color during the rotoscoped effects work, Vader got red [7]. The handbook card for Vader gives his canon appearances from A New Hope (1977), but the card is marked unverified, so the dates above come from Wookieepedia and Wikipedia instead [1][7]. Handbook: handbook/sabers/darth-vader-red.md.
Sidious’s red sabers first appear in Revenge of the Sith, and he is shown to carry two [17]. Handbook: handbook/sabers/darth-sidious-red.md (card marked unverified).
Darth Maul
Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber is the best known red saber. Wikipedia names The Phantom Menace as the first film appearance of a dual-bladed saber, wielded by Maul [1][9]. After the Clone Wars he appears with a different saber: a broken Inquisitor-style hilt with two red blades, which he disguises as a walking stick [10]. Handbook: handbook/sabers/darth-maul-red-double.md, handbook/sabers/darth-maul-red-single.md. The single-bladed card is marked unverified, and the card itself says its first appearance date belongs to a different saber.
Dooku and Ventress
Dooku’s curved hilt is blue in his Jedi days and red once he becomes Sith, according to Wookieepedia [8]. The official Databank describes him igniting a red-bladed saber on Geonosis [8]. Handbook: handbook/sabers/count-dooku-red.md (card marked unverified for color).
Ventress carries a red pair that Dooku gives her. The two curved hilts can be joined into an S-shaped double blade [11]. Wikipedia and the Databank agree on the red color [11]. She had a green saber as a Padawan and a yellow one later, so red is not her only color [11]. Handbook: handbook/sabers/asajj-ventress-red.md.
Inquisitors and Reva
The Inquisitors hunted Jedi for the Empire. They wielded crimson blades on double-bladed spinning hilts, and the show first called them “Red Blades” in a later Rebels episode [12]. The Grand Inquisitor debuted in Rebels in 2014 [12]. Handbook: handbook/sabers/grand-inquisitor-red.md (card marked unverified).
Reva’s saber has the same design. Wookieepedia says its crystals once belonged to Jedi killed in the Great Jedi Purge, and that Reva bled them herself. It first appeared in Obi-Wan Kenobi on 26 May 2022 [13]. She puts the saber down near the end of the series [13]. Handbook: handbook/sabers/reva-red.md (card marked unverified).
Kylo Ren
Kylo Ren’s saber is red-yellow and unstable, because Ben Solo bled his blue crystal and cracked it [2][14]. It debuted in The Force Awakens in 2015 [14]. Handbook: handbook/sabers/kylo-ren-red-crossguard.md. The colors and the cause come from Wookieepedia and Wikipedia, not from the handbook, whose color field was recalled from memory [14]. See the crossguard lightsaber page.
Qimir
Qimir, “the Stranger” in The Acolyte, carries a red saber that splits into two blades [15]. The Databank calls it red [15]. The handbook says an earlier check settled on red over orange, and its notes on the hilt rest on retailer pages, not the studio [15]. The exact hue is an open question, and we use no screenshots to settle it. Handbook: handbook/sabers/qimir-red.md.
Shin Hati
Shin Hati, Baylan Skoll’s apprentice, has an orange-red saber. Wookieepedia says the showrunner wanted a two-tone blade so that viewers would not guess her allegiance from the color alone [16]. Her blade shows how loose the red rule is. Handbook: handbook/sabers/shin-hati-red.md. See the orange lightsaber page.
What red means
In canon, red marks a bled crystal and the Sith and Inquisitors are its best known users [2][12]. It does not decide a character’s side. Reva lays hers down [13]. Ahsoka purifies bled crystals into white [2]. Shin Hati’s blade is deliberately not a plain red [16].
Fan guides describe red as power, rage or ambition. Those readings are interpretation, not canon. Check what a page cites before trusting it.
How red is made in a real saber
A real blade is not a crystal. It is light, and red comes from one of two sources.
In an in-hilt LED (baselit) blade, a single LED at the base lights the whole blade, so its color is fixed by the emitter. A Lumileds datasheet lists a standard red at 620 to 645 nm and a deep red at 650 to 670 nm [18]. The datasheet quotes deep red in milliwatts of radiant power, not lumens [18]. That points to low visible brightness in a lit room (inference, not a measured figure). See the blade color guide for the numbers.
A pixel (neopixel) blade has many individually addressable RGB LEDs along the blade [19]. Red is just a software setting. In ProffieOS, red is written as three integers, Rgb<255,0,0> [20]. The same hilt can switch to green or blue. See pixel sabers, Xenopixel versus Neopixel and baselit versus Neopixel.
Red lightsaber replicas and options
There are four ways to get a red blade. Pick by what you want from the saber. This list is vendor neutral.
- If you want one hilt in many colors, choose a pixel saber, set the blade to red, and change it later. See the pixel saber guide and best lightsabers.
- If you want a fixed red that is simple and durable, choose a baselit saber with a standard red emitter [18].
- If you want a deep, dark Sith tone for dim rooms, choose a deep red emitter and accept lower brightness [18].
- If you want a licensed replica of a specific character’s hilt, Hasbro sells a Darth Vader Force FX Elite collectible with advanced LEDs, a removable kyber crystal and a stand. Its page lists an estimated retail price of $278.99, as of November 2026 [21]. Compare it with independent makers in best lightsaber brands and the conversions and replicas guide. Budget buyers can start with lightsabers under $100. For a child, see best lightsaber for kids.
To judge whether any of these count as “real”, see real lightsaber. For the kinds of hilt, see types of lightsabers.

FAQ
What does a red lightsaber mean?
In canon it means a kyber crystal was bled by a dark side user, and it marks the Sith and the Inquisitors [2][12]. It does not prove a character is evil. Reva and Ahsoka show how the color can change [2][13].
Who has a red lightsaber in Star Wars?
Darth Vader, Darth Sidious, Darth Maul, Count Dooku, Asajj Ventress, the Inquisitors, Reva, Kylo Ren and Qimir all carry red blades in canon. Shin Hati’s is orange-red [7][8][9][11][12][13][14][15][16][17].
What is a bleeding kyber crystal?
A crystal that a dark side user corrupted with pain and anger until it turned red. It can resist, crack or shatter [2].
Is red a Sith color only?
No. The Inquisitors, who are not Sith, also carry red [12]. In Legends, any user could carry a red crystal.
Can I buy a red lightsaber?
Yes. Pixel sabers let you set red in software, baselit sabers use a fixed red LED, and licensed collectibles exist [18][19][21].
Is a red blade the same as a Sith blade?
Not always. Legends Sith used synthetic crystals, canon Sith use bled kyber, and Shin Hati is not a plain red [4][16].

Lightsaber Colors and What They Mean: Canon vs Legends
Lightsaber colors come from the kyber crystal inside the hilt. Blue and green are the common Jedi colors, red marks a corrupted crystal, and purple, yellow, white, orange and black are rarer. In canon, color has no fixed rule. Most 'meanings' come from Legends or fans.
How to Choose a Lightsaber Blade Color: LED and Pixel Guide
Pick a blade color by wavelength and brightness, not by name. Lime and green LEDs give the most light, blue and deep red give the least, and cameras exaggerate blue. Pixel blades set color in software. In-hilt LEDs fix it in the emitter. Watts claimed on a listing say little.
