Short answer

Blue is the standard Jedi lightsaber color. In canon it belongs to Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Luke in A New Hope, Kanan Jarrus, Ezra Bridger, Cal Kestis and Sol. The crystal sets the color, not a rank. Blue as the Guardian color is a game-era idea, not a canon rule.

A blue lightsaber is the standard Jedi color on screen. In canon, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker in A New Hope, Kanan Jarrus, Ezra Bridger, Cal Kestis and Sol all carry blue blades [3][4][7][15][17][18][19]. The color comes from the kyber crystal in the hilt, not from a rank [2][27]. The idea that blue marks a Jedi Guardian comes from game-era Legends material, not from a canon rule [20][21].

Blue is also the most listed color on the largest fan wiki: 158 pages in its blue category, against 120 green, 106 red and 42 yellow (counts include Legends) [23]. Last checked: November 7, 2026.

Below are the blue lightsaber owners, the blue lightsaber meaning in canon and Legends, how a real blue blade is made, and which real sabers come in blue. For all colors side by side, see the lightsaber colors overview. Sister pages: green, red, yellow, white and purple.

The table is not complete. Blue is the color with the most owners, canon and Legends together [23]. For the film-by-film order of every screen saber, see every lightsaber by film.

Obi-Wan Anakin and Luke

The first two films showed blue blades for Jedi and red for Sith. The blades were white on set, and the colors were added in post-production [1][28].

In canon, Obi-Wan has three sabers. The first falls into a pit on Naboo, the second is a rebuild, and the third, built during the Clone Wars, is the blue one he uses against Darth Vader on the Death Star [7]. Anakin built his first blue saber himself and lost it on Geonosis [6]. His second blue saber is the Skywalker lightsaber: he used it through the Clone Wars, lost it to Obi-Wan on Mustafar, and Obi-Wan gave it to Luke on Tatooine [5].

Luke lost that saber with his hand on Cloud City. Rey later repaired it and buried it on Tatooine with Leia’s saber [5]. Luke’s own saber in Return of the Jedi was planned as blue and became green in the final cut, so it would stand out against the Tatooine sky [1][8].

Blue sabers in the shows and games

Blue shows up outside the films too.

  • The Clone Wars: Plo Koon, Aayla Secura and Shaak Ti are blue-bladed Council and field Jedi [11][12][13]. Ahsoka’s green sabers turn blue when Anakin “improves” them while she is away from the Order [14].
  • Rebels: Kanan Jarrus carries a two-piece blue saber, and Ezra builds a blue prototype after receiving a kyber crystal at the Lothal temple [17][18].
  • Games: Cal Kestis builds his second saber on Ilum from two kyber crystals. Wookieepedia lists it as blue, though the game also offers cosmetic crystals, such as an orange one [15][16].
  • The Acolyte: Sol’s royal blue saber is damaged in the duel on Brendok. Osha then bleeds its exposed crystal red [19].

What blue means in canon and Legends

In canon, color is not a rank. The official Databank says the kyber crystal starts out colorless and takes its color when a Jedi attunes it, usually blue or green [2]. Wookieepedia adds that blue and green became the standard Jedi colors in the prequels [3].

Two cases show that the crystal, not the person, sets the color. Ki-Adi-Mundi’s hilt holds two crystals and can switch between blue and green [10][28]. Sol’s blade turned red when its crystal was bled, though the handbook card records the showrunner saying it would always have been blue in his hands [19].

Legends is where the role colors come from. Many guides say blue belongs to Guardians, the combat-focused Jedi, green to Consulars, and yellow to Sentinels [20]. The wiki traces the Sentinel class to a role-playing video game and a tabletop rulebook, and that class is “mostly signified” by yellow blades [21]. The canon Jedi Guardian page lists no blade color [22]. So “blue means Guardian” is Legends flavor, not on-screen fact. A fan guide with a vendor link does not make it canon either [20].

How a blue blade is made

On screen the blade was a coated rod with the glow added later by rotoscoping, and color chosen in post [1][3]. A real blade does it with light.

An in-hilt LED emitter has a fixed color set by the diode. Lumileds sorts blue at 460 to 485 nm and royal blue at a 440 to 460 nm peak [24]. Blue is among the dimmest colors in that datasheet: typical output is 22 to 41 lumens at 350 mA, against 184 lumens for lime [24]. Royal blue is binned in milliwatts instead, about 500 to 520 mW at 350 mA [24]. A “12W blue” can look dimmer than a “6W lime” for that reason (inference from the datasheet). The full table is on the blade color guide.

A pixel saber sets color in software, so one hilt can be blue and then any other color. See Neopixel lightsabers and Xenopixel versus Neopixel.

Real blue lightsabers

Two licensed examples exist. Hasbro’s Force FX Elite replica of Ezra Bridger’s saber has a blue blade, needs three AA batteries (not included), and is rated ages 14 and up. Its listing price is $249.99 and the page shows it sold out, as of November 2026 [26]. At Disneyland, Savi’s Workshop lets guests pick a blue, green, violet or red kyber crystal. The build is $249.99 per lightsaber plus tax, as of November 2026 [25].

Most buyers will choose a pixel saber instead, where blue is one setting. For ranked picks see best lightsabers and best lightsaber brands. For replicas of screen hilts, see real lightsabers and conversions and replicas.

Which blue to pick

  1. If you want a Skywalker or Kenobi look, buy a licensed or screen-style hilt and accept a fixed color [26].
  2. If you want blue and other colors, buy a pixel saber, where color is a software setting.
  3. If you duel, check the blade first: see best lightsaber for dueling.
  4. If you cosplay, pair the hilt with the right era: see lightsaber cosplay and costume.
  5. If your blue looks purple or flat on camera, read the blade color guide.

FAQ

Who has a blue lightsaber in Star Wars?

Obi-Wan, Anakin, Luke in the first films, Leia, Ki-Adi-Mundi, Plo Koon, Aayla Secura, Shaak Ti, Kanan, Ezra, Cal Kestis and Sol all do in canon [4][7][9][10][11][12][13][15][17][18][19].

What does a blue lightsaber mean?

In canon, nothing fixed. The crystal sets the color [2]. Guides that say it marks a Guardian are using Legends-era class ideas [20][21].

Is blue the most common lightsaber color?

Among Jedi, yes, by the wiki’s category counts: 158 blue pages against 120 green [23]. The count includes Legends and is a fan wiki tally, not a census.

Why did Luke’s lightsaber change from blue to green?

His Return of the Jedi saber was blue in early edits and became green in the final cut, to stand out against the Tatooine sky [1].

Can Ahsoka’s lightsabers be blue?

Yes. Her green sabers are changed to blue in the late seasons of The Clone Wars [14].

Are all blue lightsabers the same blue?

No. Real blue emitters range from royal blue near 450 nm to lighter blue near 480 nm, and the shade looks different on camera [24].
