A green lightsaber is one of the two standard Jedi blade colors, with blue. In canon, Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, Kit Fisto, Luminara Unduli and Luke Skywalker carry green blades [4][5][6][7][8]. Luke’s blade was blue in early cuts of Return of the Jedi and was changed to green so it would stand out against the sky [1][4]. Canon gives green no fixed meaning. Legends linked it to the Jedi Consular role [3]. See the lightsaber colors overview for every color, and the red lightsaber page for the opposite end.

Who has a green lightsaber

The table follows story era. “Canon” is the current official continuity. “Legends” is the label for licensed stories from before the April 2014 reset [1].

What green means in canon

In canon, a kyber crystal starts clear and takes on a color once it bonds with its owner. The common colors for Jedi are blue, green and violet [2]. Wikipedia describes it the same way, citing The Clone Wars and Rebels: the builder finds a crystal and meditates until it takes a color [1].

There is no rule that green belongs to a role, rank or temperament. Wookieepedia’s own list of canon crystal colors simply names green with Yoda’s shoto, Luke’s green saber, Sabine Wren’s saber and Qui-Gon’s saber [2]. Fan guides that say green means diplomacy or balance are reading a theme into the characters. Check what any page cites.

Natural crystals are not the only kind. In canon, synthetic kyber crystals are a smuggled, illegal item, described as unstable, explosive and glowing green [5]. That is a plot detail from the Imperial era. It is not why Yoda’s blade is green.

Green in Legends

Legends gave green a role. Wookieepedia’s Legends entry says the Jedi Guardian used blue crystals, the Sentinel yellow and the Consular green [3]. From the Seventh Battle of Ruusan until the Great Jedi Purge, the Jedi almost exclusively used Ilum crystals, which were always blue or green [3]. The same page lists Ahsoka’s, Luke’s, Qui-Gon’s and Yoda’s blades as green [3].

Canon never adopted the three role colors. If a page treats “green means Consular” as fact for the films, it is mixing the two continuities [3]. The same Legends page also says Luke made his saber with a synthetic crystal because he had no natural one on Tatooine [3]. That is Legends only.

What each carrier shows

Yoda

Yoda’s saber is a shoto, with a short hilt and a short green blade [5]. It was first made for a 1999 Legends reference book and first appeared in canon in Attack of the Clones in 2002 [5]. Later stories disagree about what happened to it, so Lucasfilm has not settled one version [5]. Qui-Gon, Kit Fisto and Luminara

Qui-Gon’s green saber appears in The Phantom Menace, and Obi-Wan later owns it [6]. Kit Fisto and Luminara Unduli both debut with green blades in Attack of the Clones [7][8]. The Databank describes Luminara as a Mirialan Jedi Master with a Padawan, Barriss Offee [8]. Handbook: handbook/sabers/qui-gon-jinn-green.md, handbook/sabers/kit-fisto-green.md (both unverified), handbook/sabers/luminara-unduli-green.md (verified 2026-11-01).

Luke Skywalker, blue first and green second

Luke’s first saber is the blue one he receives in A New Hope. Wikipedia says the original two films used blue for the Jedi and red for the Sith [1]. His second saber, which he builds himself, is green and first appears in Return of the Jedi in 1983 [4]. Wookieepedia says the original 1982 teaser trailer showed it as blue, and that the filmmakers changed it so it would contrast with the blue sky of Tatooine [4]. Wikipedia says the same [1].

So Luke’s green began as a production decision. Handbook: handbook/sabers/luke-skywalker-blue.md and handbook/sabers/luke-skywalker-green.md rest on Wikipedia for the colors. The handbook adds that the blue-to-green idea was not checked in its own text, so we use Wookieepedia and Wikipedia. For the blue side of the story, see the lightsaber colors overview.

Ahsoka Tano, Ezra Bridger and Sabine Wren

Ahsoka has a green main saber in The Clone Wars film, and later a yellow-green shoto [9]. In Season 7 Anakin returns her sabers, and both blades are blue [9]. Wookieepedia notes that a flashback in the novel describes them as green, so the sources do not agree [9]. Handbook: handbook/sabers/ahsoka-tano-green.md (verified 2026-11-01, with a note that the shoto shade varies by source).

Ezra Bridger’s second saber, a green one, first appears in the Rebels Season 3 premiere, and Sabine Wren later owns it with her own changes [10].

Kyle Katarn (Legends)

Kyle Katarn is a Legends character from the 1995 game Dark Forces [11]. His first saber was Jedi Master Qu Rahn’s, with a green blade. Later he built his own, blue [11]. The handbook lists him as green, which holds only for the first saber. Handbook: handbook/sabers/kyle-katarn-green.md (card marked unverified).

How green is made in a real saber

A real green blade is light, not a crystal.

In an in-hilt LED (baselit) blade, a single LED lights the blade, so the color depends on the emitter. A Lumileds datasheet lists Green at 520 to 540 nm and Lime at 566 to 569 nm [12]. Typical output at 350 mA is 79 to 102 lumens for green and 184 lumens for lime [12]. On those numbers, lime is about twice as bright as green and looks yellower (inference from the datasheet). See the blade color guide for the detail.

A pixel (neopixel) blade has many individually addressable RGB LEDs along the blade [13]. Color is software: in ProffieOS a color is three integers for red, green and blue [14]. See pixel sabers, Xenopixel versus Neopixel and baselit versus Neopixel.

Green lightsaber replicas and options

There are several ways to get a green blade. Pick by what you want from the saber. This list is vendor neutral.

  1. If you want green today and other colors later, choose a pixel saber. See the pixel saber guide and best lightsabers.
  2. If you want the brightest green in daylight, choose a lime emitter, accepting the yellower hue [12].
  3. If you want a deep, vivid green, choose a green emitter [12].
  4. If you want a licensed collectible, Hasbro’s Ahsoka Tano Force FX Elite has a three-color blade: blue, green or yellow-green, with advanced LEDs [15]. Compare it with independent makers in best lightsaber brands and the conversions and replicas guide. Budget buyers can start with lightsabers under $100. For a child, see best lightsaber for kids.
  5. If you want to pick your own crystal, Disney’s Savi’s Workshop lets guests choose a kyber crystal, which sets the blade color [1].

To judge whether any of these count as “real”, see real lightsaber. For the kinds of hilt, see types of lightsabers.

FAQ

Who has a green lightsaber in Star Wars?

Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, Kit Fisto, Luminara Unduli and Luke Skywalker, plus Ahsoka Tano’s main saber and Ezra Bridger’s second saber in canon [4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. Kyle Katarn’s first saber is green in Legends [11].

What does a green lightsaber mean?

Canon gives it no fixed meaning. Legends links it to the Jedi Consular [3]. Other readings are fan interpretation.

Why did Luke Skywalker switch from blue to green?

The blade was blue in early cuts and was changed so it would be easier to see against the blue sky of Tatooine [1][4].

Is green a Jedi only color?

In canon it is mostly seen on Jedi, but not only. Sabine Wren, who later owns Ezra’s green saber, is not presented as a Jedi in our sources [10] (unverified).

Is Kyle Katarn’s green lightsaber canon?

No. He is a Legends character [11].

Can I buy a green lightsaber?

Yes. Pixel sabers set green in software, baselit sabers use a green or lime LED, and licensed collectibles with a green setting exist [12][13][15].
