What 69,569 old forum posts taught us about saber buyers
An archived builders forum holds 5,850 topics and 69,569 messages from 2014 to 2018. Search data shows that newcomers mostly search for fixes: charging, batteries, sound, stuck parts and first builds. Lore pages get far more views but fewer clicks. Here is what that says about buying.

Most saber buyers who landed on old lightsaber forum threads were not shopping any more; they already owned one. They had a saber in hand and a problem: it would not charge, would not start, was too loud, or would not come apart. In the data below, six “get it working” themes earned 3,251 clicks at a 1.21% click rate, while costume and film-reference pages earned 953 clicks at 0.36% [1][2].
This post describes patterns only. It quotes no forum text and names no members. The numbers come from our own files, listed under Sources, and the grouping into themes is an editorial judgement.
Where the numbers come from
The archive is a frozen English-language builders forum. Its own counters show 5,850 topics, 69,569 messages, 24 sections and 146 categories, and the newest post is from April 2018 [3]. The figure in our working notes was “about 69,000”; the counter says 69,569, so that is the number used here.
The posts are third-party content from 2018 or earlier, restored from the Web Archive [3]. Of the 138 topic cards we reviewed, 7 started in 2014, 35 in 2015, 55 in 2016, 30 in 2017 and 10 in 2018 [2]. That matters: the hardware in these threads is pre-Neopixel, mostly 6W and 12W LED blades on 18650 cells. Read the questions as timeless and the answers as dated.
Search Console covers 2025-06-27 to 2026-10-29 for the 138 pages with 10 or more clicks [1]. Over 16 months the whole property recorded 7,519 clicks and 1,095,218 impressions [3]. Those 138 pages account for 5,887 clicks, about 78% of the total. They are 138 of 5,850 topics, or 2.4%, so attention is very concentrated. The top 10 pages hold 2,435 clicks (41% of the 5,887) and the top 50 hold 4,544 (77%) [1].
What sort of page earns clicks
We split the 138 pages by type [1].
| Page type | Pages | Clicks | Share of the 5,887 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Question and answer | 55 | 2,652 | 45% |
| Discussion | 30 | 1,046 | 18% |
| Reference or index | 9 | 811 | 14% |
| How-to instruction | 15 | 563 | 10% |
| Gallery | 8 | 349 | 6% |
| Review | 6 | 177 | 3% |
| News | 8 | 139 | 2% |
| Comparison | 6 | 137 | 2% |
| Other | 1 | 13 | under 1% |
A single question with a plain answer beats every other format. The forum’s general “open topics” section supplies 53 of the 138 pages and 2,771 clicks, 47% of the total. The hilt and electronics build sections supply 17 pages each, and the modular parts section 10 pages with 621 clicks [2].
Threads were short. The median card has about 9.5 messages and the mean is 16.9. A total of 41 cards have 6 messages or fewer, and 44 have 15 or more [2]. A short thread with a clear answer is enough to rank, which tells us length is not what readers wanted.
What newcomers ask
We assigned each of the 138 pages to one theme. Some pages could fit two; each is counted once. Clicks are for 16 months [1][2].
| Theme | Pages | Clicks | Impressions | Click rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Charging, batteries, power | 11 | 795 | 75,457 | 1.05% |

Power and charging come first
The single largest theme is the least glamorous. Typical questions: where is the battery and how do I take it out, which 18650 cell is right, how long should a new cell charge, why is the charger light blinking, and what do I do about a broken charge port [2]. The “how do I charge it” thread alone drew 175 clicks at an average position of 8.3 [1].
One answer in the battery threads stressed that current delivery matters more than capacity in mAh, and warned against unprotected cells. That is a forum member’s claim, so treat it as unverified here; the battery guide covers the topic with sources.
Taking things apart
Eighteen pages, 697 clicks and the best click rate of any theme (1.81%) are about disassembly and stuck parts [1][2]. The pattern is fear of damage: stripped or stuck blade retention screws, blade plugs that will not come out, buttons that fell out or were glued in, and how to shorten screws. The top hilt disassembly question alone had 310 clicks [1]. Buyers of pre-built sabers want to open them, which is a reason to read about serviceability before buying. See lightsaber hilts and the parts list.
First builds
The most-clicked page of all (406 clicks, 23,623 impressions, position 8.0) is a parent asking for simple build instructions for a child’s first saber [1]. The replies pointed to video tutorials and to modular systems with no soldering. Smaller threads ask whether a pre-built model takes third-party parts, which thread size a retention screw uses, and what the inside diameter of a hilt is [2]. If this is your situation, start with build your own lightsaber.
Search demand matches the forum. Our keyword file lists “build your own lightsaber” at 1,200 US searches a month with difficulty 0 [6].
Converting toy sabers
Eight pages cover swapping the original electronics of a mass-market or collector toy for LED boards, such as a Force FX conversion. They total 480 clicks, and one step-by-step conversion post had 234 clicks and 26,711 impressions [1]. People wanted a better blade without losing the hilt they already owned.
Sound
Twelve pages, 382 clicks. The largest group is how to turn the sound or start-up voice off, followed by sound-font collections, reaching the SD card, and replacing a speaker [1][2]. A buyer worry that rarely appears in product listings: can I silence it? See lightsaber soundboards.
Will not start, or runs hot
Four pages and 269 clicks sit here, and two “will not start” threads drew 188 and 185 clicks (the second is counted under power) [1]. The usual suspects named in the replies were the charge port, the memory card and the board manual. A third thread reported a hot housing and a colour shift, with advice to check the heat sink and use warranty service [2]. Practical lesson: check warranty terms and repair routes before you pay.
What buyers worried about before paying
Shipping and ordering produced 10 pages and 184 clicks [1]. The themes: lead time stretching from a few weeks to several, parts out of stock, travelling by air with a saber, import duty on orders to the UK, and where a parcel was [2]. These are specific questions a buyer asks before ordering.
Vendor opinion threads, meaning arguments about which seller to avoid, got 248 clicks and 44,884 impressions at a 0.55% click rate [1]. Opinions in those threads are one-sided and at least 8 years old, so we do not use them as evidence about any vendor.
Pages that get seen but not clicked
Costume and film-reference pages are the opposite case: 17 pages, 953 clicks and 261,663 impressions, a click rate of 0.36% [1]. The lists of saber designs by film, the largest of which has 85,425 impressions, are what a searcher meets, but they rarely click through [1]. Our keyword file shows the same split: lore and character queries carry the biggest volumes and the lowest commercial value [6]. The lightsaber colors and every lightsaber by film guides serve that audience.
Dueling pages are small. Eleven pages earned 192 clicks, 3.3% of the total [1]. Questions there are about blade length, neck thickness and finding sparring partners [2]. If that is your interest, read best lightsaber for dueling.
What the search index tells us about the rest
Of 6,361 clean URLs in the sitemap, 771 were confirmed indexed, 1,949 were checked and not indexed, 30 were contradictory, and 3,611 were unknown because they had no impressions and were not inspected [4]. Search Console showed 898 pages with impressions in the last 90 days and 4,283 over 16 months [4]. Clicks over the window fell 77% between the first and second half, and 72% of clicks came from the USA [3]. The long tail is mostly invisible, so any claim about “what the forum discussed” is a claim about the visible slice.
What this means if you are buying
These are patterns in questions, not tested advice. None of it comes from hands-on use.
- Ask where the battery is and how you charge it. This was the biggest single worry.
- Check whether the hilt can be opened with ordinary tools and whether third-party parts fit.
- Find out if the sound can be muted before you buy.
- Check the warranty and repair route, since heat and not-starting threads were common.
- Allow for lead times, duties and stock gaps.
The hardware in these threads is old. For current boards, read Neopixel vs Xenopixel and best lightsaber. Our hobby-market notes also say the community’s recurring topics are builds, Neopixel, Proffie and “looking for a” requests [5].
Limits
- The archive stops in 2018. It cannot tell us about today’s products.
- Impressions and clicks are search data, not a count of readers.
- Theme assignments are ours, and one page can fit two.
- We did not interview anyone and did not test any product.

How We Pick and Rate Sabers: Criteria, Test Plan and Disclosure
Hands-on testing has not started yet. This page sets out what we will measure (brightness, runtime, volume, clash durability), how we choose sabers to include, how affiliate links work, and what is published meanwhile: guides built from vendor listings and cited sources, with every missing test flagged.
The Saber Market in Late 2026: Who Sells What, and at What Price
The saber market in late 2026 splits into five tiers: licensed toys, theme park builds, factory neopixel sabers, premium custom makers and do-it-yourself Proffie builds. No reliable market size exists. Neopixel is now the default tech, prices cluster at $150 to $280, and independent buying advice is still thin.
