A lightsaber katana is not a film weapon. The search covers three different things: canon curved-hilt sabers such as Count Dooku’s, katana-style lightsaber toys and builds with a guard on the hilt, and separate LED katana props that are not lightsabers at all. A real katana has a curved single-edged blade [1]. A lightsaber blade in the films is straight, so the two meet only in the hilt. What people usually mean
Search results for the phrase split across three kinds of page. The pages opened for this guide show product listings for katana-style lightsabers and for LED katana props [7][8][9]. Results also included anime-themed light-up katanas, but those pages were not opened, so that part is unverified. No page opened ties the phrase to a film scene or a canon weapon.

Curved hilts in canon
Curved-hilt lightsabers first appeared with Count Dooku’s saber in Attack of the Clones, according to the Star Wars wiki [3]. The handbook lists Dooku’s saber as canon with a clearly curved hilt [10]. The wiki says the curve let the wielder slash and lunge with more precision, and it names Asajj Ventress, who had two curved-hilt sabers that joined into a double-bladed weapon, and Ahsoka Tano, who made a pair of curved-hilt sabers after the Clone Wars [3]. See double-bladed lightsaber for the joined type.
The wiki also describes Dooku as a duellist who favoured the second form of lightsaber combat [3]. For more on forms, see lightsaber forms.
Where did the shape come from? A 2021 Looper article says Dooku’s moves resemble medieval dueling fencing and that the prop designers drew on edged weapons from Filipino cultures, including the barong [4]. That article does not mention the katana. No source read gives a katana origin for the curved hilt, so treat that idea as a fan comparison, not a design fact.
Even so, Japanese swords did influence the series. Wikipedia says the name Jedi may come from jidaigeki, the Japanese term for samurai period dramas, and that George Lucas named samurai culture and bushido among his inspirations for the Jedi and Sith [5]. For the prequel films, choreographer Nick Gillard combined swordfighting styles including kendo and rapier [6].
Katana vs lightsaber
The two objects share little beyond the grip. A katana has a curved, single-edged blade, usually 60 to 80 cm long, with a long grip made for two hands [1]. A lightsaber blade is a straight plasma beam in the films, and the hilt is the only physical object.
The guard is a clearer link. A katana’s tsuba is the guard between grip and blade, and its main job is to stop the hand slipping onto the blade during thrusts [2]. Most film hilts have no katana-style guard. Crossguard sabers add one, with a different purpose; see crossguard lightsaber.
| Point | Katana | Lightsaber (film) |
|---|---|---|
| Blade | Curved, single-edged steel [1] | Straight plasma blade |
| Guard | Tsuba between grip and blade [2] | Not standard, crossguard designs aside |
| Grip | Long, two-handed [1] | Varies, one or two hands |
| Curve | In the blade [1] | In the hilt only, on curved-hilt sabers [3] |
Katana-style lightsabers
Vendors sell lightsabers they call katana models. One listing for a red katana lightsaber with a Proffie 2.2 board states a katana-style straight hilt with a gold finish, a red-wrapped handle and a tsuba, a 1 inch Neopixel blade, a 3200 mAh rechargeable battery and a light-duelling rating, at $249.99 as of November 2026 [7]. The page does not say whether the hilt is curved.
A second vendor lists a model called Xeno DP Tsuba with a 13.4 inch hilt and a removable 36 inch polycarbonate blade, at $340.00 as of November 2026 with either an RGB in-hilt LED or a Xenopixel board [8]. Its page describes a flanged emitter and does not describe a separate guard, so the name may be a styling reference.
What this shows: “katana” on a lightsaber listing is a styling label. It tells you about hilt dressing, not blade shape, and the blade is straight [7][8]. These are fan products, and neither page states a Lucasfilm licence. For blade and board choices, see Neopixel lightsaber and types of lightsabers.
LED katana props
The third meaning is an LED sword. A Masked Warrior LED false katana from one prop seller is a plastic fantasy katana with an LED blade, listed at $34.00 as of November 2026, 38.5 inches long, powered by 3 AAA batteries that are not included [9]. The seller calls it decorative and for costume, display, convention or Renaissance fair use, and the page has no age or safety statement [9].
That is a costume prop, not a lightsaber. It has a tsuba, a scabbard and a katana shape, but the page lists only an LED blade and no sound board or pixel blade [9]. If you want it for a lightsaber cosplay costume, it will read as a samurai sword.
Build one yourself
A custom katana saber is a hilt project. The general route is a hilt with a guard section, a pixel blade and a Proffie or Xenopixel board, as the vendor listings above show [7][8]; the steps are in customize a lightsaber hilt and lightsaber hilts. For the electronics side see lightsaber soundboards.
Two limits apply. A curve in the hilt is purely cosmetic, since the blade stays straight [3]. Balance with a guard and wrapped grip is untested here (see the test note above).
Where to buy
Neutral options are the vendors read for this page: a saber maker with a katana model [7], a second maker with a tsuba-named model [8], and a prop seller for LED katanas [9]. All prices above were seen on product pages on 7 November 2026 and can change. Check the duelling rating, battery and return policy on the listing, and read best lightsaber brands for how vendors compare.
Decision path
- Want the film look? Pick a curved-hilt saber based on Dooku’s [3][10], and check the blade is straight.
- Want a samurai look on a real lightsaber? Choose a katana-style hilt with a guard [7].
- Want a sword for a costume only? A plastic LED katana is cheaper, but it is a prop [9].
- Want to duel? Check the rating first; a light-duelling model is for light contact only [7].
- Want it custom? Start from the options in lightsaber hilts.

FAQ
Is there a katana lightsaber in Star Wars?
No source read shows one. Canon has curved-hilt sabers, first seen with Count Dooku, whose blades are straight [3].
Are curved lightsaber hilts based on a katana?
Looper links Dooku’s saber to fencing and Filipino edged weapons, not the katana [4]. Japanese influences are documented for the series in general, such as the name Jedi [5].
What is a katana lightsaber?
A vendor term for a saber with a katana-style hilt, usually with a guard and wrapped grip, and a straight blade [7].
Can a lightsaber have a tsuba?
Yes. Some vendor models do [7]. The guard is styling and, on a katana, keeps the hand off the blade [2].
Is an LED katana a lightsaber?
No. It is a plastic costume prop with a light strip [9].
Can I duel with a katana lightsaber?
Only if the listing says so. The model read here is rated for light duelling [7].

The main types of lightsabers are single blade, double-bladed, crossguard, curved hilt, shoto, lightwhip and pike, plus rarer designs like the Darksaber. Most have a real hobby version. Retractable blades are the exception: only DIY builds turned up in the research for this page.
Lightsaber Hilts: Types, Materials and Empty Hilts Explained
A lightsaber hilt is the handle and body of a saber, everything except the blade. Empty hilts come without electronics, a chassis holds the board and battery inside, and most real hilts are machined aluminium or printed plastic. Empty hilts start around $51 as of November 2026.
Customize a Lightsaber Hilt: Take It Apart, Finish and Modify
To customize a lightsaber hilt, first take it apart: empty it, then free glued threads with heat or acetone, or a vice with soft jaws. Then choose a finish (weathering, etching, powder coat, wrap) and mods like kill keys, windows and accent LEDs. Check wall thickness before you drill.
Lightsaber Cosplay Costume: Robes, Belts, Armour and Rules
A lightsaber cosplay costume is clothing, a belt that can hold the hilt, and a saber that passes club and convention checks. Jedi robes follow earth tones, armour is a separate build, and conventions inspect props and tag them. This guide covers each piece, clubs, and where to buy.
