Short answer

A lightsaber pike is a staff weapon with a long hilt and short blades. In canon it carries two yellow blades and belongs to the Jedi Temple Guard. In Legends it can also be a spear-like weapon with one blade. It is not the same as Darth Maul's double-bladed saber.

A lightsaber pike is a staff weapon with a long hilt and short blades. In canon it carries two yellow blades, one at each end, and is the weapon of the Jedi Temple Guard [1][2]. In Legends it also means a spear-like weapon with one short, thick blade [3]. It is close to a double-bladed lightsaber but not the same weapon, and it is not Darth Maul’s saber [2][6].

What a lightsaber pike is

The Star Wars Databank describes the pike as similar to the double-bladed lightsaber, with two yellow-hued blades at either end of a staff, used by the Jedi Temple Guards [1]. The canon wiki adds that the pike has a longer hilt and much shorter blades than a double-bladed saber [2].

That is why “pike” can mean two things. Canon uses it for the Temple Guard staff. Legends uses it for two forms, covered below [2][3]. Each section below says which continuity it draws from.

Pikes in canon

The Jedi Temple Guard protects the Temple on Coruscant. The Databank says its members carry “imposing lightsaber pikes”, thick double-bladed weapons with a rare yellow blade [1]. The Guard first appears in The Clone Wars episode “Sabotage”, which aired on 9 February 2013 [4].

The yellow colour was a late choice. The canon wiki says the pikes were first planned with green blades for the episode “The Wrong Jedi”, and that they became the first lightsabers to be canonically yellow [2]. For the colour itself, see the yellow lightsaber guide.

Other canon pikes the wiki lists [2]:

  • A collapsible and a hinged version, and some with a haft that emits a single shoto blade [2].
  • Pikes used on screen to keep Anakin Skywalker restrained during Ahsoka Tano’s trial, and to escort Barriss Offee away after her duel with Anakin [2].
  • The Grand Inquisitor, a former Temple Guard, carrying a foldable pike [2][4].
  • Luke Skywalker repairing a damaged pike at a Jedi outpost in 3 ABY and later using the surviving half as a standard saber [2].
  • Darth Bane’s pike: a single blade on a very long handle, with an orange blade. It was designed for The Clone Wars episode “Sacrifice”, did not appear in the final cut, and was later canonised in The Secrets of the Sith (2021) and the Galaxy of Heroes mobile game [2].

The canon wiki lists a price for the Temple Guard model of 9,600 credits [2]. That is in-universe cost and says nothing about real prices.

Pikes in Legends

Legends is the label for the older, non-canon continuity. The pike first appeared there, in The Force Unleashed, a 2008 novel by Sean Williams [3]. Wikipedia credits the video game of the same name with introducing it as a lightsaber with a shorter blade on a long handle, resembling a spear [9].

Legends describes two forms [3]:

  1. Spear form. A long handle made of a saber-resistant material such as phrik alloy, with one shorter, thicker blade at the end. It gives longer reach [3].
  2. Double form. It looks and fights like a double-bladed saber. The Temple Guards used this one, with yellow blades relatively shorter than a staff’s [3].

The Legends page lists 4,000 credits and 2 kg for the pike [3]. It also notes that it is unknown why the Temple Guard weapons are called pikes, since they are almost identical to a double-bladed saber and the word had earlier named an actual polearm [3].

Legends also gives the pike a wider cast. Knights of Zakuul, Emperor’s Shadow Guard members, the Royal Guard and the Imperial Senate Guard used them [3]. Kazdan Paratus, an Aleena Jedi, wielded one in The Force Unleashed, and the colour and shape changed by game platform: blue pike on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, yellow pike on Nintendo DS, and a yellow double-bladed saber with an elongated hilt on Wii, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable [3].

Senya Tirall and the Knights of Zakuul

Senya Tirall’s lightsaber pike comes from the online game Star Wars: The Old Republic. It is a blue-bladed, single-bladed pike, a traditional Knight of Zakuul weapon [7]. Senya used it at the site of the Ord Mantell massacre, where her daughter Vaylin ambushed her [7]. Its first appearance is the story “Betrayed” on the game’s official site [7]. The Legends wiki lists the Knights of Zakuul as a main user of the spear form [3].

Pike vs lightsaber staff

“Lightsaber staff” is the everyday name for a double-bladed saber. The wiki lists saberstaff and lightstaff as other names for it and treats the pike as one of its variants [5].

Darth Maul’s weapon is the famous example. Wikipedia names the double-bladed lightsaber as most famously wielded by Maul [9]. The canon wiki lists his later saber as a double-bladed lightsaber disguised as a cane [6]. Neither source calls a Maul saber a pike.

The practical difference is proportion. A double-bladed saber is a staff-like hilt with a blade at each end [5]. A pike has a longer hilt and much shorter blades [2][5]. For the standard staff, read the double-bladed lightsaber guide. For all the hilt shapes in one place, see types of lightsabers.

Lance and spear

The Legends wiki says the pike is also known as the lightsaber lance [3]. It is another name for the same weapon, not a separate type. The spear form is the one that resembles a halberd or spear [3]. In canon, the pike is a staff and not a spear [1][2].

If you were looking for a lightsaber with a long shaft and one blade, the Legends spear form is the match. Wikipedia describes the same shape as a pike with a shorter blade on a long handle [9].

Real lightsaber pikes

You can buy a pike-shaped hobby saber, and one team has built a plasma pike as a stunt. A real blade that cuts does not. For that, read real lightsaber.

Three routes exist for a pike-shaped hobby saber. All prices are vendor-stated as of November 2026.

  • Ready-made double-bladed Temple Guard sabers. Artsabers sells a Temple Guard double-bladed saber with Proffie 2.2 electronics and a Neopixel blade for $729.99. The page lists 32 or 36 inch blades, says the blades are for light dueling and not heavy impact, and states a 10 to 14 day delivery [11].
  • Pike extension. Ultrasabers sells a Yari (Pike) Extension for $30, a 15 inch aluminium tube that turns an MHS-compatible saber into a pike or staff. It is an accessory, not a saber, and it needs a separate coupler [8]. The listing says fabrication takes 1 to 3 business days [8].
  • Build or convert it yourself. The parts side is in lightsaber hilts, build your own lightsaber and lightsaber conversions and replicas.

Check fit first. Ultrasabers states that the extension works only with MHS-compatible sabers and needs the right coupler [8]. Check that against your hilt before ordering. An extension also makes the saber longer, so check where you plan to swing it.
