Short answer

A complete Jedi costume is a tunic, a tabard, an obi and belt, trousers, boots and a hooded robe, in earth tones. A boxed Halloween set covers the basics for about $60 to $100. Convention and club builds need better fabric, matched leather and a saber that passes prop checks.

A complete Jedi costume has six parts: a tunic, a tabard, an obi and belt, trousers, boots and a hooded robe, all in earth tones. A boxed Halloween set covers the first four for about $60 to $100 (as of November 2026) [3][4]. Convention and club builds need heavier fabric, matched leather boots and belt, and a saber that passes a prop check.

This page is the parts list. Club standards, armour and event rules are in the lightsaber cosplay costume guide, so they get only a short mention here.

Jedi costume parts list

PartWhat it isNotes
TunicLong-sleeved base layer, often two layersNatural-looking fabric such as linen, cotton or wool [1][2]
TabardWrapped scarf-style panel over the tunicWidth roughly 5 to 6 inches (12 to 15 cm), scaled to the wearer [1]
Obi and beltWide sash plus a leather-look beltObi width matches the tabard [1]
TrousersPlain, loose, darkNo visible pattern
BootsLeather or leather-like, mid-calfBrown or black, no rubber, match the belt [1]
RobeHooded robe or full cloakHooded capes and full Jedi cloaks are accepted by the Rebel Legion [1]

Plural searches for “jedi costumes” usually mean this same kit in different character looks: Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Anakin, Mace Windu and so on. The cut changes by character, the layers do not. Our every lightsaber by film page shows who carries what.

Jedi tunic

The tunic is the first thing to get right. The Rebel Legion Jedi standard describes a sleeved outer tunic that fits closer at the forearm [1].

Pick fabric that hangs. Heavy matte linen or cotton looks better than shiny polyester and photographs better under convention lights. A licensed Halloween tunic listed in November 2026 is gauze, 99% polyester with 1% spandex [3]. That is fine for a party, but it is thin for a long convention day.

Jedi robes

Jedi robes are the outer layer, and a Jedi robe costume piece is either a hooded robe or a full cloak. The Rebel Legion standard accepts a hooded cape or a full Jedi cloak [1]. Keep the colour in the earth tones the standard favours, which are brown, grey, black and white [1]. Red and black together read as Sith and are not allowed in the Jedi standard [1].

For jedi robes in cosplay, check three things before you buy:

  • Length: ankle length hangs best, but it drags on stairs and in crowds.
  • Hood: a hood that stays up on its own needs lining or stiffer fabric.
  • Closure: robes are left open in front for most looks, so a robe that needs fastenings is the wrong cut.

One retailer listed a Jedi costume robe for men at $39.99 and a brown hooded cloak at $29.99 in November 2026. The cloak was out of stock, and so were some premium sets, so check availability before planning around a listing [4].

Tabard obi and belt

The tabard hangs over the tunic from the shoulders. Rebel Legion standards set its width by the collar seam and shoulder edge, about 5 to 6 inches (12 to 15 cm), matched to the obi [1]. For one female Jedi character the tabard is a single lighter piece than the tunic [2].

The obi is the wrapped sash at the waist. Wide inner leather belts with a thinner outer belt and a buckle appear in the prequel-era look [1]. Fastenings should not show [1]. A vinyl belt with a metal buckle comes with at least one licensed boxed set [3].

Boots hair and accessories

The Rebel Legion standard calls for leather or leather-like boots in brown or black, no rubber, reaching mid-calf and not above the knee [1]. Boots and belt should match, brown with brown or black with black [1]. A boxed set may not include shoes at all [3].

Keep hair plain and tidy. Hair colour is a character detail, so follow the reference you chose.

Accessories worth adding after the basics:

  • Pouches or a utility belt in the same colour family as the boots [1].
  • Plain dark gloves if the standard for your character shows them.
  • A comlink or wrist piece only if your character has one.

Female Jedi costume

There is no separate “female cut” in the club standards. Female Jedi use the same layers: tunic, tabard, obi, trousers, boots and a robe [1]. What changes is the character reference.

Two examples from the Rebel Legion pages: one New Republic era Jedi uses a tabard lighter than the tunic, wrapped behind the neck as a single piece, and a medium brown obi with a lighter border [2]. An Infinities-era Leia standard uses a collarless vest tabard that is open at the sides, with the tunic collar still visible [2]. Pick one character and follow that page, rather than mixing looks.

For boxed options, a licensed retailer lists a women’s Jedi costume at $79.99 to $99.99 and a plus size women’s version at $89.99, as of November 2026 [4]. Search for “female jedi costume” or “jedi costume female” and you will find the same two routes: a boxed set, or a built-up version of the parts list above.

Jedi Halloween costume or convention grade

A Jedi Halloween costume is a boxed set worn once or twice. Convention and club builds are worn for long days and may be judged. The difference shows in fabric, fit and the saber.

Halloween setConvention grade
PiecesTunic, trousers, belt, mock undershirt [3]Layered tunics, tabard, obi, matched leather, robe
FabricGauze and polyester [3]Linen, cotton, wool [1]
FootwearNot included [3]Leather boots, mid-calf [1]
SaberAdd separatelyStatic hilt or a checked saber [1][6]
Typical price$60 to $100 for adult sets (as of November 2026) [3][4]Varies by maker (unverified)

For Jedi cosplay at an event, read the venue rules first. San Diego Comic-Con inspects all props daily and bans functional or sharp-edged ones [5]. Comic-Con LA lists lightsabers as allowed after a safety screening and tag [6]. Our cosplay guide covers both in detail.

Where to buy or make

No single shop wins. The options fall into four groups:

  • Costume retailers: licensed boxed sets and robes [3][4].
  • Marketplaces and independent makers: tailored tunics, tabards and robes. Ask for a measurement sheet, fabric sample and refund policy.
  • Sewing patterns: many exist for tunics and robes. Check seams and sizing before you cut fabric.
  • Secondhand: robes and boots from other cosplayers, with photos of the real item.

Whatever route you pick, check the listing against the parts table above and the reference for your character.

Carrying the saber

A clip at the hip is the usual carry. The Rebel Legion standard accepts a Covertec-style clip or a belt hook [1]. The hilt has to be built to take it, so check the hilt design first: our lightsaber hilts guide explains the styles.

Colour matters for the character you choose. Jedi blades are mostly blue and green, with yellow, orange and purple less common [7]. See blue lightsaber, green lightsaber and purple lightsaber for the characters behind each colour, and lightsaber colors for the overview.

For children, a lighter hilt is easier to wear on a belt. See best lightsaber for kids. For travelling with the costume, read display, store and travel with a lightsaber.

FAQ

What do you need for a Jedi costume?

A tunic, tabard, obi and belt, trousers, boots and a hooded robe, in earth tones. Add a hilt that clips to the belt [1].

What colours are Jedi robes?

Brown, grey, black and white are the usual earth tones in the Rebel Legion standard, and red with black is not allowed because it reads as Sith [1].

Is there a separate female Jedi costume?

The layers are the same. Pick one character reference, such as a Rebel Legion page for a specific Jedi, and follow its tabard and obi rules [2].

How much does a Jedi Halloween costume cost?

A licensed boxed set for adults was listed at about $60 to $100 at one retailer in November 2026, with a robe-only listing at $39.99 [3][4].

Can I bring a lightsaber to a convention?

Often yes, with screening. Comic-Con LA allows lightsabers and tags them, and San Diego inspects every prop and bans functional or sharp-edged ones [5][6].

Do boots need to match the belt?

For club standards, yes: brown with brown or black with black, with no mixing [1].
